Question

Team Development stages are first developed by Bruce Wayne Tuckman. The five stages of team development are as follows:

1. Forming: This is the first stage of team forming in which the team members meet each other for the first time. In this stage the members of the team introduce themselves to each other and will get to know about the backgrounds of each other. The Team will also discuss the scope, goals and objective of the project or the program they would be working on. The Leader of the Team should ensure active participation of all the members of the team in all the discussions before they start working on the project

2. Storming: In this stage, the team starts working on the project. This stage is very crucial and unavoidable for every newly formed team. In this stage the team members share their ideas and opinions on how the work should be carried out. It is also quite possible that due to difference in the opinions conflicts may arise between the team members. The Team leader should listen to all the ideas of the team and respect the ideas and opinions from the team. This stage will come to an end when the Team starts working together collectively to achieve the goals of the project.

3. Norming: This is the stage where the team starts working effectively. The Team is more focused on the team goals rather than the individual goals. In this stage, the Team members start trusting each other and look out for assistance in case of any help. They also decide how the work is to be carried out in the team to resolve the problems and conflicts. The Team makes a significant progress as they start working together.

4. Performing: In this stage, the Team is functioning well and they are focused on reaching the team goals. The Team becomes interdependent, where they discuss the ideas and opinions and take decisions effectively. In case of any differences, the team works through it and curb the conflicts so that the project's progress is not affected. The Team leader is not involved in day-to-day activities as the team is now capable of managing and making decisions on their own. The Team leader should monitor the performances of the team members and ensure that he/she appreciates the team members for their hard work and efforts.

5. Adjourning: In this final stage of Team growth, the project comes to an end and the team members are now moving apart. The Team leader should make sure to celebrate the success of the team in achieving the project goals and make a note of the best practices which were carried out by the team for future reference. The Team members bid farewell to each other and wish them luck for their future endeavors.
