Question
You can access the CLI environment on a Cisco IOS device in several ways. Indicate the access method is most appropriate for the given scenario:
A. console
B. Telnet/SSH
C. AUX
1. On vacation and need to check on one of your switches. The only access you have is your cellular phone
2. Physically cable access to the switch, are not prompted for a password, and can access the IOS. This is the default operation
3. The password for a device was changed. No one knows what the new password is, and you need to reset a new password
4. The device you are configuring cannot be accessed by cable because you are not in the building. You use a telephone to dial in to it.
5. Do not need remote-access services to the networking device to configure it because the device is physically accessible to you
6. Use a password-encrypted connection to remotely access a device over a network
Explanation / Answer
First of all I will explain the three types of connections mentioned in the question:
Now let us see the six scenarios given in question:
1. Cellular phone is not connected directly to any router. This means the only type of suitable method is Telnet or SSH.
2. There is direct connection through cable to the router. So, console port is the best type for this.
3. We have to login directly without password. So, again console is the way to do this.
4. Since there is no direct cable connection between the telephone and the router, we can't use console for this. However, the telephone is conected to a router which can dial into the device.
Therefore, we can use AUX port type of connection for this.
5. Since, the device is physically accessible, console connection is preferred.
6. We need password encryption because we are over a network. SSH is the way to do this. (Telnet by default doesn't encrypt the password but SSH has encryption).
