The impact of Data Mining in our day to day lives.

Data mining, also referred to as data or knowledge discovery, is the process of analyzing data and transforming it into insight that informs business decisions. Data mining software enables organizations to analyze data from several sources in order to detect patterns. Most people are concerned about online privacy but may not be aware of the various ways that their
personal information is collected during routine Web browsing. There are several types of personal information that may be collected voluntarily or involuntarily through the Web browser or disclosed by a Web server.

One such issue that recently broke out is that, the website Ars Technica reported that users who checked data gathered by Facebook on them found that it had years of contact names, telephone numbers, call lengths and text messages. It was on the same day Facebook bought ads in U.S. and British newspapers to apologize for the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the social media site faced new questions about collecting phone numbers and text messages from Android devices. Facebook said that the information is uploaded to secure servers and comes only from Android users who opt-in to allow it. The folks also say the data is not sold or shared with users’ friends or outside apps. They say the data is used “to improve people’s experience across Facebook” by helping to connect with others.

The explosive growth of the Web makes it a very useful information resource to all types of users. Today, everyone accesses the Internet for various purposes and retrieving the required information within the stipulated time is the major demand from users. But still, it has got great privacy issues. So , be sure not to disclose your personal details to anyone.

Big Data for public good.

We all have that data capturing devices and sensors all around us everytime. We are constantly connected to each other by means of different technologies.International development and humanitarian organizations are increasingly calling for digital data to be treated as a public good because of its value in supplementing scarce national statistics and informing interventions, including in emergencies. As data analytics have evolved over the last decade, the discussion about their uses and problems has evolved to include considerations of ethics, privacy and legal boundaries. The notion of ‘data as a public good’ has been widely cited since the high-profile use of data from mobile phones, in particular, in the humanitarian and international development sectors.

There are two possible definitions of a public good that are relevant in this scenario. One is the notion that data should be made available to help international organizations promote social good in the public sphere, i.e. that data should be more public to create more good impacts from it. The second is the argument that data should be formally defined as a public good, because its potential power to fight poverty and disease and to inform emergency response is such that international institutions should have access to it.

Data has become and will continue to be a foundational basis for our society. It is much like the air we breathe, water we drink and electricity we depend on. However, there are many challenges too associated in this field. Treating data as a public good and regulating data aggregators as custodians of the public good will level the playing field for data access and exploitation, thus in the long run spurring sustained competition and innovation.

Privacy is your right. So is access to food, water, humanitarian response. The challenge is that we see a lot of regulatory frameworks which don't have the right litmus test.
