Explanation / Answer

I am the CIO of Facebook, and I want to buy data from Google as soon as possible. However, we don’t know the origins of the data and how the data was collected from Google. We should need to understand the source of the data and ensure that the data does not falls in any non-ethical category like data stealing, data inappropriate sale, misuse of data etc. We want to have formal process for data collection, data purchase and payment for data to Google. We want to run it as a formal process of sale and purchase, so that we abide by legality and do not make any issues for the organization.

1. Stakeholders are directly or indirectly affected by this decisions these are customers, investors and directors team

2. Challenges in addressing the ethical dilemma by identifying at least 2 key issues and their subsequent implications/ramifications: The two key issues are as below

·       Legal issues due to data purchase: The one of the major key issue will be that there may be legal issue which can be raised on the data purchase from Google. Thus we need to take appropriate action to ensure that we will be free from legal issues by making proper formal process to avoid legal issues.

·       Brand image impact due to data purchase: The brand image may get impacted that face book has purchase the data from Google, thus it will create negative impact on the company. Facebook need to ensure that the data purchase follows the formal process so that they avoid any potential issue which may impact the brand image in the market.

In order to make sure that the data vollected by Google is ethical and fair I would like to interrogate the team looking after data collection and maintenance at Google. Data is the asset and Organizations today need to be very much careful about the data they use and apply in any area, the questions that I would like to ask in this context are:

4.  Implementing Solutions to Ethical dilemma

Solutions to ethical dilemmas can be implemented by following guidelines in the organization and considering the highest valued social principles. The values, mission and vision of the organization reflect organizational ethics and values. The religious sentiments and learnings also need to be considered while implementing solutions to ethical dilemmas. It should be considered whether the decision implemented is understood by the group or society where it is implemented and the necessity and effect of such decision.

Two ethical models to brainstorm the solutions are Utilitarianism and Rights(Kant model). Utilitarianism is taking a decision which is the favor of maximum number of people and protects their interests. Alternative course of actions are determined and the solution which is in the best interest of most people is chosen.

Rights model by Kant is based on the philosophy that each individual has the right to be treated with dignity and to be treated in an equal and respectful manner. The legal rights are defined by law and moral rights are ingrained in the societal and cultural patterns. It is the right of a person to determine how to behave with others and others can treat him.

Based on the above approaches solutions to ethical dilemmas are brainstormed.
