Cross-Cultural Management and diverse workforce for Business to succeed:

Cross-Cultural & Workplace Diversity refers to an inclusive environment at work locations where employees, operations members, project members, suppliers, vendors, customers etc., who are the key stakeholders of the business are not discriminated with the background of one's culture, race, skin color, physical appearance etc.,

Organizational cross culture is a function of values, norms, belief and various different assumptions that group of people follows in an organization. These shared norms possess a great deal of influence over the people in an organization and this governs various aspects like dressing, responding, behaving, job performance, following some systematic guidelines etc., Each individual in the team will have different norms and values for themselves. My thoughts in accepting and incorporating differences in a cross-cultural & diversified workplace:

The issues fundamentally appear in situations where one fails to see other in their perspectives. For example, in a situation where the manager of India and China doesn’t seem to be in sync with each other’s opinion. Each of them does not seem to understand other person's cultural values, norms, and behaviors. Some of the team strategies that overcome the Cultural issues, diversity issues and stereotypic behaviors are as follows:

By developing the team through this 3-way process of Mapping, Bridging and Integrating, teams shall start functioning without any diversity issues that arise due to culture, geographical location etc., and also sometimes without the dependence of the local manager within the region as they will be equipped to work along with the multicultural diversified staff.

To improve organization's climate for diversity:

In order to improve the climate for diversity, Business shall focus on Affirmative Action and cultural changes in the organization when it comes to diversity. An affirmative action is an act that favors people who tend to be affected by discrimination or unfairness. Its policies are those in which an institution who engage in an effort to improve opportunities for traditionally expelled groups in America. The focus is always towards education & employment. From the perspective of higher education, affirmative action refers to admission policy where they provide equal opportunity to access education for the people who were historically underrepresented for women and minorities.

It allows diversity is in place. Supports deprived persons with advancing. Acts as a boost to underprivileged students as it secures equality for all races.  It breaks color oriented discrimination and encourages hard work and study. It is really required to recompense minorities due to several decades of slavery. It allows students of minority community enroll for higher education. It encourages equality at work locations and social places…

Diversity & Inclusiveness: Ethnocentricity is a behavior displayed by people in much organization where most of us get judgmental about people who belong to a different group which may be classified as Religion, Geographical boundary, Ethnicity etc., based on the established prototypes by our own culture.

A situation in which Ethnocentric was present in the workplace:

My organization is a global company which is located in more than 40 countries. Many staff work as individual contributors whose reporting managers will be expatriates located in multiple locations across the globe. An Asian Designer will be reporting to a western cultured manager located in Europe etc., however, there will be staff that will be part of teams as well. More of Individual Contributors and less of team players. Though they are Individual Contributors, similar staff will be located in multiple different locations. Meetings happen on a daily and weekly basis through video conference and seldom through audio only. The team members from Japan, China, India, Srilanka, London, Philadelphia, Ireland & Australia participate in the daily meeting. Am the leader of this team located in Dubai. All of my 12 team members are located in different parts of the world. 7 team members are located in different countries, 5 of them are from China. Every day when we start our pre-shift huddle, everyone is given an opportunity to speak about their previous day's achievement and today’s goal. While everyone gets their turn, when staff from Ireland and Srilanka speaks, the 5 member team from China often makes comments the communication style of the other nation personnel. This negativity soon spread among other members of the team and this resulted in a lower productivity of high performing people. Though they lacked in communication, their performance levels were very high. I as a leader of this group was observing this behavior for quite some time. I decided to take business etiquette sessions for my teams to overcome this ethnocentric behavior.

For this cross-cultural management and diversified culture, I would like to pick up some of the Business Women Leaders and explain their leadership traits in multi-national companies.

Monif Clarke, founder, and CEO of Monif: Clarke underwent a challenge with her team who wasn’t speaking up as they were nosed down working. Then she realized there are areas where improvements were required to make their job easy. Her number one priority was to ask a lot of questions to her team members, customers, stakeholders to clarify the challenges they go through and get them sorted out. She portrays herself as the captain of the ship where her teams are wearing the company product and the engine and the propeller. Here she has to be responsive to the needs of the team.

It is not about elevating our self above others. Leadership is about lowering yourself so people work with us and as organization thrive for creating value. When she is serving she can't help but be Empathetic.

One negative attribute is Micro Management. Today's millennial generations are not really interested in their supervisors and managers interfering in their daily routines. They are willing to contribute to the larger organizational goals through proper goal setting exercise and build phenomenal trust between their managers and the subordinates.
