In the entrepreneurial school of thought of strategic management, organizations mainly remain responsive to the dictates of an individual i.e. the entrepreneur. Entrepreneur, being the organizational leader determines the vision, centralize the decisions and develop strategies aligned with their own vision. It also promotes intuitive as well as visionary leadership thoughts. Though we know that this kind of visionary leadership is needed but sometimes over reliance on an individual’s vision can promote inflexibility and can be fatal for organizations.

On the other side, while discussing the prescriptive schools of thought of strategic management, inflexibility can be observed in strategic choices due to over emphasis on predefined designs, plans or positions. This leads to more deliberate strategies unlike to entrepreneurial school where strategies are largely deliberate in emergent fashion.

Discuss deliberateness in strategies while considering three prescriptive schools of thought along with entrepreneurial school.

Deliberateness in strategies in three perspective schools (along with entrepreneurial school) of thought is discussed below:

1. Entrepreneurial school – In this school of thought strategy formulation is a visionary process and the visionary process takes place in the mind of the charismatic entrepreneur. Deliberateness in strategy is absent or present at negligible levels and strategy formulation tends to be hurried as it is based on the process of intuition. There is little reliance on precise designs and plans and this leads to little deliberation in strategic formulation and implementation in entrepreneurial school.

2. The design school – As per this school strategy formulation is seen as a process of conception. Level of deliberateness is high in this school as clear and unique strategies are formulated in a careful and unhurried manner so as to ensure that internal situation of the organization is matched to the prevalent external situations of the environment that directly as well as indirectly affects the organization.

3. The planning school – Strategy formulation in this case is a formal process and as such the situation at hand is analyzed in detail and rigorous set of steps are taken to formulate strategy. Level of deliberateness is high in this school is the process is both cerebral as well as formal and the process consists of distinct steps that are supported by applicable techniques.

4. The positioning school – In this school strategy is formulated using an analytical procedure. Level of deliberateness is high as industry situations are formally analyzed and so the strategy is formulated in a careful manner.
