Research Proposal
Introduction
Mass rapid rail transit has become an integral part of life in large cities of the world. Some of the earliest of such subway systems were developed in late 19th century in the Western countries. In the 21st century, Asian cities have built modern metro systems with stations that newer material and futuristic designs. To enhance the brand value of their cities, local governments in the Western countries that have 100 year old systems are looking at refurbishing the subway or underground stations with new interior design. The designs will have futuristic aesthetics elements matching the changes that have happened in the local neighbourhood and at the same time be functional and accessible to the users.
Problem Statement
The main challenges and constraints in implementing the new interior design for the subway stations are that the structural architecture cannot be altered, the stations cannot be shut down during the refurshing work, the spaces available are narrow and must accommodate all the existing utilities, services and small businesses. The designers will have to evaluate
Proposed Study
To implement this project, as planners, we must first conduct a research to study the existing layout, pattern of usage, understand the current design shortcomings, learn what the user community needs and finally what design will be technically and financially feasible. This study is important because it would give the framework to the broad requirements of what is to be done. The results of such a study will act as an input for the creative designers to design the new subway stations.
Scope of the Study
The scope of the study is to investigate the problem of space constraints in the existing subway stations of the city, for which the following areas of inquiry must be pursued:
The second scope of the study will be to gather information about the needs of the users of the system, which will require inquiring into the following areas:
Methods
The secondary research will include consult articles written by experts on urban infrastructure designs, study of detailed design reports of newly built metro stations in Asia, and review of articles in practitioner art/ design publications that specialising in public space design.
Qualifications of the researchers
The researchers are senior interior design practitioners and professors in urban arts, who have interest in studying the possibility of updating the interior design of the vital backbone of our cities, the mass rail transit systems to reflect the modern times.
Conclusion
The research proposes to investigate the space utilisation, user experiences and expectation from the subway systems. The results of such a study will help planners to evaluate if a new interior design can be implemented in the subway stations to reflect modern aesthetics and functionality.
Approval
With necessary approvals, along with any opinion or suggestion, the research work can be initiated.
