Question

Design an Ethernet network to connect a single client PC to a single server. Both the client and the server will connect to their respective workgroup switches via UTP. Their workgroup switches are connected directly by a trunk link. The two switches are 1, 700 meters apart. They need to communicate at 500 Mbps. Your design should specify the transmission link between the switches. Add to your design in the previous question. Add another client next to the first client. This client will also communicate with the server and need only 100 Mbps in transmission speed. Again, your design should specify the locations of switches and the transmission link between the switches.

Explanation / Answer

1.

(a) Cat 5e standard for UTP is capable of carrying 1000 Mbps data . Cost is low . This can be used for client to it's workgroup switch . The distance support is 100 mtr . So the client and switch can be 100 mtr apart .

(b) Depending upon the number of clients served by the server the bandwidth for the cable can be decided . Here assuming only this client is connecting to the server . Cat 5e will suffice , with limitations as given in (a) above .

(c) This link between switches can be created using a fiber optic single mode cable 1000BASE-SX which can support 1 GB and 5 km .

2 .

(a) For first client , Cat 5e standard for UTP is capable of carrying 1000 Mbps data . Cost is low . This can be used for client to it's workgroup switch . The distance support is 100 mtr . So the client and switch can be 100 mtr apart .

(a) For client 2 , Cat 5 standard for UTP is capable of carrying 100 Mbps data .This can be used for client to it's workgroup switch . The distance support is 100 mtr . So the client and switch can be 100 mtr apart .

(c) Depending upon the number of clients served by the server the bandwidth for the cable can be decided . Here assuming only the above two clients is connecting to the server . Cat 5e will suffice , with limitations as given in (a) above .

(d) (c) This link between switches can be created using a fiber optic single mode cable 1000BASE-SX   which can support 1 GB and 5 km . A VLAN needs to be created and configured which can be used in bandwidth sharing mode allowing dedicated bandwidth of two clients Or VLAN Id mode using which both can get the whole Bandwidth . A VLAN capable switch on both sides will be needed .
