Question

Manufacturing company that is considering Linux as a solution for some or all servers in its IT Department. The company hosts an Oracle database on UNIX, and the UNIX servers that host this database contain several small programs that were custom-made. Windows 8 is currently used on desktops throughout the company, and users store their data on Windows Server 2012 file servers. What considerations must you keep in mind before migrating your company’s servers to Linux? Which distributions and Open Source Software would you choose to accomplish this? If you need to create a report detailing the benefits of moving to an open source solution using Linux, what benefits would you list in the report to persuade others in the company that Linux lowers the total cost of ownership?

Explanation / Answer

To take precautions’ before migrating company servers from Windows to Linux:

These are necessary steps to take for before going to change Operating system

Different open sources of Linux:

There are many flavors of open source, they are Red Hat, Fedora, Mandrake, SUSE. These are open source projects give smooth running of work environment.

SUSE is backed by Novell , while the Java Desktop System is supported by Sun. Both are solid companies and both distributions are also solid choices. SUSE can make a great deal of sense for companies used to managing their desktop environment with systems management tools like Zenworks and SMS.

Red Hat servers and have experience with the Red Hat network , extending their IT infrastructure with Red Hat desktops also can make good sense.

Debian Linux has one advantage over the above mentioned tools. It can upgraded over the internet automatically no need insert any CD.

Advantages to migrate from Windows to Linux:

The study reports that enterprise development managers see greater potential for Linux to replace Windows as an operating system than replacing Unix, especially since Linux can be deployed easily on Intel-based commodity servers.

In addition, 36% of developers expect to migrate to the 2.6 Linux kernel within a year of its release. The 2.6 kernel is expected to improve scalability across more processors and provide the foundation for improvements in multi-threading, the report notes.

According to my knowledge we won’ t get any major problems while in the network also and we need install some drivers to supporting for hardware.

Exactly I don’t know estimation cost that’s why I didn’t mentioned here.
