Process Capability Ratio We want to produce a new item which has a diameter of 3mm and a tolerance of 0.5 mm One of our machines produces with a precision of 0.1 mm (our standard deviation of the production). Can we use this machine for this process? 2. Sigma level of the production We are producing the previous defined product with the same tolerances and we want to know what the sigma level of the production is. Also comment this result. Average production output is 3.2 mm Standard deviation of the production is 0.15 mm

Explanation / Answer

1. Diameter = 3mm

Tolerance = 0.5 mm

Machine precision = 0.1mm

Now, this means that we can produce a product from 2.5mm to 3.5mm considering the tolerance level.

So, based on the machine precision we are at 5 Sigma which means, we will be able to produce around ~98% of the product in this range which is acceptable. Hence we should go ahead with this.

2. As stated about it is 5 Sigma level of production.

Diameter = 3.2mm

SD = 0.15mm

Hence the product will be in the range of 3.35 to 3.05 which is at the 5 Sigma level and hence is acceptable.
