Question

Compare and contrast the standards of professional ethics for the IEEE (available at http://www.ieee.org/about/corporate/govornancc/p7-8.html) or ACM (available at http://www.acm.org/about/code-of-ethics) with theoretical standards proposed by authors like Bulger in "The Scientist in Society" or Resnik in The Ethics of Science. Things to consider: The fundamental issue involved in this question is a comparison of suggestions of "the way things ought to be" with the way things are (i.e., what has this professional organization established as being essential to ethical conduct in its members). Where does principle and practice overlap (where are the similarities) and where do they diverge (where are the differences)? If one list contains items that the other does not, which standard is correct? Should the theoretical model incorporate elements from the practical model, or vice versa?
