Question

Suppose there is a Token-Bucket based regulator designed for traffic shaping in a network. This regulator has a bucket size of 5600 bits with a token replenishment rate 3200 bits/sec. At time zero, the first data packet of 300 bytes arrives at the regulator and the bucket contains tokens equivalent to 2800 bits. Depending on whether the first packet can pass the regulator or not, the bucket slice may or may not be changed. What do you think the bucket size will be (in bytes) after the first packet arrives? At time 1.5 seconds, the 2nd packet arrives. To prevent this packet from being discarded or buffered for later transmission, what could be its maximum size in bytes?

Explanation / Answer

As mentioned here bucket size is : 5600 bits = 700 bytes

And bucket is already filled with 2800 bits = 350 bytes, so it has 350 bytes of bucket size

First data packet of size 300 bytes arrive, so this will be easily get fit into the bucket, hence after first packet bucket size will be reduced to 50 bytes.

After 1.5 second, second packet arrive, packet size should not exceed more then 50 bytes, to prevent this packet from being discarded.
