Question
You are in a management position in your organization and have experienced success at getting
your team to be effective at accomplishing its goals. One of your colleagues has years of
experience and is known for his/her management skills. He/she is very “systems oriented” and
organized and always seems to complete tasks on time – yet something seems missing. There is
little creativity from their group and also little commitment. His/her staff has high turnover –
not promotions but lateral moves. There doesn’t seem to be much relationship between your
colleague and his/her team.
a. What might be at play here?
b. If your colleague was open to suggestion, what might you recommend?
c. Is it possible to be a good manager but a poor leader? Explain why or why not.
Explanation / Answer
Here the main problem is lack of leadership qualities and clear goals as to what needs to be achieved in which way. I would recommend my colleague to give direction to your team with your excellent management skills, appropriately supervise the team by assigning right person to right task and most appropriately motive the team to achieve the desired goals because sole success is not value unless the whole team is effective in achieving the desired goals. Yes it is possible to be a good manager but a poor leader because a person is able to effectively manage the team on the baize of his inner qualities and skills but to be a good leader you need to have leadership skills in order to motivate and supervise employees into right direction. Being a manager your success depends on your abilities while being a leader your success depends on the entire team’s success. A manager may be good at his own work but he may not be good at working with the team and motivating them to the desired objective.
