For example, John joins a fantasy football game based on the English Premier League (EPL) and creates his fantasy team called John FC. He selects Wayne Rooney to play for this fantasy team. When Rooney scores a goal in a real-world football match, his goal will be registered as fantasy points for John's fantasy team, say 5 points for one goal scored. John will earn points from all his players that played and the accumulated points decides John's ranking in the fantasy football leaderboard. In the United States, over 27 million people are playing fantasy sports. Fantasy sports are not new. However, the development of web fueled the recent boom in playing the fantasy sport games. Fantasy sport is a game of numbers and statistics. Players act as a general manager or team owner to build his/her own team. In different sports, different sets of numbers are use. Regardless of the type of the sport, there are generally two sets of decision to be made. The first set of decisions is the draft decision. Before the season starting, participants have to go through a drafting process. The second set of decisions is the game-by-game decision. After desired players are drafted into the fantasy team, and after the season starting, game participant acts as a general manager, deciding on the line up or each game. These decisions, especially the drafting decisions, are based on historical data and based on the information that can be gathered from media. Many web sites have been providing these numbers and information for assist the playing. However, these data are usually presented in flat file format. That is, these data can only be view in a spreadsheet-like format. It is hard to make sophisticate decisions based on the way data are presented. Currently, there are many web sites providing advanced services and analysis reports on a fee. On the Internet, these services and platform providers are now a million-dollar business already. It seems that many of these web sites are very primitive. Even so, these web sites seem to be making money. Tempted by the idea that you may be able to make some money by building a sports analysis web site. In the mean time, you can sharpen your knowledge in database, networking, reporting and application development. You decided to give it a try by building a prototype first. Furthermore, you can submit this web site to fulfill the requirements for your MIS542 class. What a perfect idea! You decided to start with the Fantasy Baseball. There are too many things that you can do to start your web site. However, you need to start somewhere. The first thing that you decide to do is to create a database for analyzing historical data. To start, you have approached your professor. Your professor has given you some sample datasets stored in Microsoft Excel format. These datasets contain player's performance data from 2005 to 2015 (see attached files, playerhistory.zip). Also, you have downloaded two score keeping sheets. One is the fantasy team draft sheet. The other is the team stat sheet. The fantasy draft sheet is used to build the fantasy teams while the team stat sheet is used to keep track the team performance throughout the season.
