Question
You’re called in to consult for a company that’s issuing about 100 new wireless mobile devices to selected employees. There are two subnets, each with a DHCP scope that has about 150 unused addresses and an access point that relays DHCP requests from wireless clients to the DHCP server. The mobile devices will be equally distributed between the subnets. Both scopes are served by a dual-homed server. You want these mobile devices to be issued IP addresses, using the last 75 addresses of both scopes, and have a shorter lease time for addresses. What do you propose? What information do you need to carry out the proposal?
PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR ANSWER IN A FEW PARAGRAPHS
Explanation / Answer
Solution:-
The brief proposal document for DHCP configuration :-
The DHCP server allocates the IP addresses dynamically to the users whether permanent users and guest users. But we can differentiate them by configuration. First we concern about the new 100 mobile wireless device that will issued to the selected employees. There are two separate subnets with the 150 unused IP in DHCP scope.
First I propose that the mobile wireless devices are equally distributed in two subnets. Half of the mobile wireless devices are connected from first subnet's AP while other half connected to second Subnet. Now each Subnet has a scope of 150 IP DHCP IP addresses. So we can reserve the last 75 IP of each Subnet for the mobile wireless devices. This can be possible by DHCP IP reservation configuration. As these IP are reserved for the fixed users so the selected employees who will use the mobile wireless devices. And remaining unreserved scope of IP can be allocated to the guest users by DHCP server. So this is better alternative for the fixed users are their IP will not changed by time to time also no chance for IP conflicts.
Now we discuss about the DHCP lease time. I propose DHCP IP lease wtime should be set 4 hours. So every four hour the DHCP server checks the client awake or not. If client is not there then the IP is released and if client is awakes then the DHCP server extends the lease further for next four hours for the same IP. So the lease time is quite short shorter lease time we set then it results in traffic on the link. So lease time of 4 hours quite good choice in a company environment.
So by this document w can decide that how new mobile wireless devices can get access to the DHCP server efficiently as there are reserved IP scope on the DHCP server. And we defined a quite short period of lease time so network flow can be normal and DHCP operation also normal. So every one can efficiently use the subnets and the DHCP server with better performance.
