Question

Problem 2: How does this app have a potentially impact on racial, gender or religious discrimination? Suggest potential actions for rectifying the problem. Here is a description of an app which helps a pedestrian plan a route. “As a pedestrian travels, various difficulties can be encountered, such as traveling through an unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures. A route can be developed for a person taking into account factors that specifically affect a pedestrian. Moreover, the route can alter as a situation of a user changes; for instance, if a user wants to add a stop along a route.” Additional information about the app says that the app is meant to help “avoid unsafe neighborhoods, bad weather and difficult terrain by taking information from maps, weather reports, crime statistics and demographics.” There is some debate about the app determining crime stats based on race and social class.

Explanation / Answer

Everywhere when we look,we see differences in wealth, status and power. Some groups have higher status nd greater privilege than others. This inequality in the society we call it as social stratification. In this unequal social system, there is often unfair treatment directed against certain individuals or social groups. This is referred to as discrimination. Discrimination can be based on many different characteristics—age, gender, weight, ethnicity, religion, or even politics.

If an app is being developed,it should not have any specifications ginst the racism or gender or any other discrimination. An app should be useful in guiding a person if he or she is in any problem when they go outside.Acording to the descripton given for this app, it can protect the person from unsafe conditions around and from bad weather conditions and some crimes. The idea of this app is good but there arises a question to what extent the app will protect us.

It is said that the app identifies a person's information through maps, crime statistics and demographics. If it is taking data about incidents of crime that directly impact public safety ,there should be no racial or religious or economic discrimination.

Conventional route generation systems obtain data from various sources and generate a direction set to be used by a person operating an automobile. A user commonly inputs a starting location and an intended destination in addition to travel constraints (e.g., to avoid highways, minimum travel time, minimal travel distance, or minimal gas consumption); based upon inputted information, a travel route is generated. However, there are numerous difficulties in translating vehicle (e.g., automotive) route generation to pedestrian travel. For instance, a pedestrian can commonly traverse terrain that is more rugged then many vehicles (e.g., climbing steep and rocky hills); conversely, a pedestrian can become more susceptible to environmental influence, such as from cold temperatures.

It is a part of an overall effort to make navigation systems more intelligent so they keep you out of danger, whether you are driving or you are on foot. The app should be able to access genuine and correct information regarding a person. It should not have any flaws. Also some people who do not have the app ,they are however affected from crimes.Based on religion it should not show any differemnce among people.

The interweaving of social media and geo-navigational applications could create this problem. It’s easy to imagine very subtle judgments among loosely connected social groups having a large influence on where drivers and pedestrians are directed in their travels. Perhaps worst of all, technology is masking the racial and socio-economic judgments at issue here.So certain steps and technology has to be implemented to avoid such discrimination.
