Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas. Data integration involves combining data from several different sources. The data are usually stored using varying technologies, which in no way provide a consistent and unified view of the data. Data integration has become a very important aspect for companies as they partner with one another or merge with one another. Complete the following: Research and discuss at least 2 different techniques for data integration. Provide an example of 2 systems within your work environment that use data integration in some way.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Different techniques of data integration:

Manual Integration:

User integrates data directly by the interaction with software and data sources. The integration of data is done by the user. User must have knowledge about the architecture and schemas of data source. Each data source will be different database. So the user has to know the querying language for each data source. Disadvantages of this technique is that , user should be technically expert and this integration is slower than automated integration.

Middleware Integration:

Middleware systems retrieve the data from different databases and integrate it to provide a single integrated schema. Though the data sources are implemented using different technologies the middleware is able to gather information from different sources and also able to query the data from these sources. To build the integrated systems different middleware tools are combined.

Uniform Data Access:

In this integration, about physical data to be integrated the application has a global view. At data access level the source data which is distributed is logically integrated. However providing global view of integrated data is time consuming because the access of data, making it homogeneous and integration has to be done in run time.

Common Data Storage:

The integration of physical data is done by moving data to new storage. Fast data access provided by physical data integration. This integration is implemented in operational data stores and data warehouses. The new data storage can be used for data analysis and mining.

Federated database systems:
