Question
UMass Amherst says that upgrading the dorms from the older Ethernet network to 802.11n Wi-Fi cost less than upgrading to a newer wired network, but the system also gives students slower communications speeds than a new wired network (such as the one used in research labs and data centers) could give them. Do you agree with this decision? Why or why not? Suppose you're planning to wire a fraternity house for computers. You don't have 12,000 students; you have about 15 who live there and another 15 or so who come for meals and to study. Discuss the pros and cons of wired versus wireless access. Which would you choose? (Assume the connection from the house to its ISP is the same in either case.)Explanation / Answer
1) I will prefer 802.11n Wi-Fi over wired network at the cost of slower communication speed. Having wired network are costly to maintain and any breakages/damage to the wire has to be manually fixed. You always have to physically connected to LAN to access the services. With wireless network, you can run one or more devices simultaneously.Wifi provides more flexibililty and scability in terms of coverage area and you can easily access internet within a decent range. It provides you freedom to move from one place to other which is not easy in wired networks.Wireless networks requires less maintenance and are easy to troubleshoot.
2)Prons of wired networks:- (i) Provides high speed internet . (ii)Security is much reliable. Cons of wired netwroks:- (i) Installation and maintenance cost is high (ii) Difficult to troubleshoot.
Pros of wireless networks:- (i)Easy to maintain and coverage area is more. (ii)Can run mutiple devices without any physical connection. (iii) Easy to troubleshoot Cons of wireless netwroks:- (i) Security is a concern in this case. (ii) Speed is slow as multiple device share common access points. I would choose wireless access to avoid high installation and maintenace cost. Also since 15 students are just for meals and study , why to invest huge money on wired networks just for few hours.A good high speed ISP could easily support 30 connections and provides you decent surfing/downloading experience. Someone can easily connect to network without any physical connection from his/her own place and can easily trobleshoot if there are some issue connecting to network. With everything going wireless now a days, installing wired networks is generally not recommended.
