Question

Hello, I need this for my introduction to computer science class in college. Our instructer told us to go out and interview people with the same major or people with computer science degrees. --In a paragraph or two, can you explain why math is important for computer science, your personal experience using math for computer science and finally, what can we learn from computer science. If you want, you can state what company you work for as it will be interesting to know what you do at your job on a daily basis. You can put your name or just write anonymous. Thank you

Explanation / Answer

Hi my friend, first of all congratulation to you for opting Computer Science. I will tell you why math is important for computer science and what you can learn from Computer Science.

A) Why Math is important for Computer Science ?

When I was starting my journey in Computer Science, I thought of same question then I searched about it. Somewhere I found this very interesting answer which I will share with you.

Mathematics is to Computer Science is what notes are to music. You can learn to play piano without knowing about notes but then, you wont become a musician.

Mathematics is very usefull at every layer of Computing -

1.The lowest layer with ALU performing the Arithematic and logical operations.

2. The middle layer with Operating system making use of mathematics and algorithms for :-

3. The upper layer with all sort of application and system software using all sort of algorithms to create all sort of magic.

Right now, when you are reading this answer, there is mathematics going on to get the text at exact place according to the resolution of your computer. The font and color of text is also displaying on the screen when some logic is executing inside the processor. Instruction sets are being executed by processor as you work.

Now as you there are multiple topics in Mathematics, I will tell which topic you need to focus on most. Command on these topics will help you in your journey in Computer Science.

a) Probability - Very Important

b) Graph Theory - Very Important for Data Structures

c) Linear Algebra & Trigonometry - Computer Graphics & Game Development

d) Set Theory - Very Important

e) Computational Geometry - For Research Purpose

B) What you can learn from Computer Science ?

You will learn a lot. It also depends on the curriculum being followed in your college.

When I did my bachelors, it all started with Fundamentals of Programming. You would learn a variety of programming languages. Over the period of my course, I was trained in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, SQL, PL/SQL, and C#.

I also learned about Data Structures, System Architecture, Principles of Compiler Design, Theory of Computation, Formal Languages & Automata Theory, Design & Analysis of Algorithms, Object Oriented Programming, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Computer Networks, , Software Engineering, Object Oriented System Design, Artificial Intelligence, Open Source Softwares & Frameworks and Cloud Computing.

Now courses like Big Data & IOT (Internet Of Things) are also included in the curriculum.

A major portion of your computer science curriculum will involve programming. You start out by learning high-level, basic languages such as Java and C++. As you go on, you'll be introduced to more complex coding methods, including Prolog, Scheme, and machine code, also known as assembly language programming. At first, you can expect to write code for a program to print "Hello World" on the screen. This will evolve into entire structures and algorithms, along with operating systems design.

C) Personal Experience on using math for computer science.

Well I am software developer in XYZ company and I am using math for developing new logic and creating new algorithms. These algorithms will help our clients to reach their goals.
