Compare and contrast at least three of the following divergent cultural characteristics and describe which one from each pair would describe the culture that you hail from: individualist vs collectivist, explicit rule vs implicit rule, uncertainty- accepting vs uncertainty-rejecting, time orientation (monochronic vs polychronic, short term vs long term) masculine vs feminine orientation, direct vs indirect, materialism vs relationships, low-power vs high power distance. Your post should also comment on how your particular cultural characteristics compare with your fellow peers.

Explanation / Answer

Answer- Individualist is all related with own’s independence & the freedom attached to one’s emotions. Cultures have that strength to show the values & which reflects the true picture of culture. So we have all those past stories wherein all actors overcame the problems of people. Ingenuity plays important role in order to overcome the problems. In collectivist, ownership of community matters a lot & also the private property.The resources which are jointly produced good benefits to the society.

Explicit rule is defined properly to all the people so that no confusion occurred & also agenda along with the guidelines for the coming meeting is circulated to all the members so that preparation can be done before attending the meeting. In implicit rule, rules are circulated non-verbally & everyone knows about their role & responsibility with no specific agenda.

Uncertainty- accepting is all related to your known thing with the person & how familiar one person in sharing their thoughts with other person. If we are well aware about the other person then it will give impact to the uncertainty. Verbal communication also helps a lot in bringing down the uncertainty factor. Intimacy factor also comes in picture wherein if you are intimate with other person then the uncertainty level comes down. Information knowing condition is also applied in this case as we get to know each other well & then uncertainty definitely will come down.

In monochronic time, focus is given to complete one thing at one point of time & there are no interruptions at any given point of time whereas polychronic time is bit complicated wherein focus is given at many things at any given point of time.

Short term is related to receive & giving the compliments to other person in a quick time whereas long term is treated to be more into persistence & prudence type of nature.

Masculine orientation is more like having competition in good intensity with a taste of positive way of doing it whereas Feminine emphasize on the modesty part.

Direct means asking the question or giving the opinion straightforward but Indirect means asking questions about their personal traits rather than business questions & then coming to the point.

Materialism type of people are focusing directly on the goods & services provided to them whereas relationship people often asked various question of their production & then dealing with goods.

Low power distance people speaks in front whatever be the conditions are whereas high power distache people needs to be more into sophisticated & needs to understand the feedback & then telling the things.
