Select a significant tragic event (either domestic or global) that has occurred during the last 50 years. The interactive PowerPoint in this unit provides some ideas of historical tragic events but understand that these are just ideas. After describing the event and the post-tragedy events, discuss the ethical aspects revolving around this incident. This may require some additional research to understand the ethical situations and the impact these had on affected people being able to move on with their lives.
1. Describe the actions of people and organizational leaders directly and indirectly involved with the tragedy. Specifically, address the ethical issues they faced.
2. What were some of the actions of local, state and federal personnel with respect to dealing with this tragedy?
3. Explain the strategies of organizations that attempted to assist with the clean-up after the tragic event. Describe several of the pressures that influenced their strategies. Distinguish between social responsibility, integrity and simple business ethics.
4. How has this event affected the ethical culture here in the United States? What other affect has it had on society as a whole?

Tragic Occurrence Discussion: Hurricane Andrew
Hurricane Andrew is one of the tragic events to have occurred in the American continent. According to Perilla et al., (2002) this event happened in 1992 and is said to have originated from the tropical wave of the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane is held to be the worst category five intensity and of 270 km/h speed. Hurricane Andrew significantly affected areas such as Florida, Bahamas, and Louisiana. Among the post-tragedy events of the hurricane were the destruction of buildings and homes. It is estimated that the storm destroyed approximately destroyed 100,000 buildings in all the areas affected. Besides, the overall damage cost of the hurricane was projected to about 26 billion U.S dollars. Additionally, this catastrophic incident led to the death of 65 people in all the states affected.
Actions Used By People and Organization Leaders
One of the primary actions undertaken by both the individuals and organizations directly or indirectly involved to the tragedy was to offer relief (Selvaretnam et al., 2012). Care and concern ethics drove this action. For example, based on the care ethic people and corporate leaders especially those indirectly involved with the tragedy responded to the event by offering material support such as blankets, food, and tents to the affected people. Additionally, the directly impacted individuals were driven by the concern ethic to provide rescue missions to survivors. For instance, corporate leaders such as that of Bahamas National Disaster Coordinator motivated employees and the local people to engage in rescue missions.
Actions of the Local, State and Federal Personnel
The local, state and federal personnel individuals responded to the tragedy by offering material support. For example, the state and federal personnel delivered ambulances to aid in taking those seriously wounded victims to get adequate healthcare services to hospitals. Besides, both the local, state and federal persons were directly involved in the rescue missions. Selvaretnam et al., (2012) asserts that the state and federal staffs such as the nurse also offered first aid services to the injured victims of the hurricane. Additionally, the local, state and federal personnel were involved in evacuation mission before and after the catastrophic.
Strategies of the Organizations in the Tragic Event Clean-Up
One of the strategies employed by organizations in cleaning up the tragedy was the intensive approach. As a marketing strategy, it was aimed at promoting efficient and equality in the distribution of relief to all the affected areas by the hurricane. Another strategy adopted by these organizations was the defensive approach. This methodology was aimed at rebuilding the infrastructure of the destroyed places for the better of the society and enhancing continuity of business activities in these locations. Among the pressures that led to the implementation of these strategies was the social responsibility of organizations. These institutions had to enhance their care for their stakeholders through offering aid to the affected people (Paige, 2013). Another pressure was the need to promote organizations’ integrity. This aspect was in attempt enhance unity of organizations in helping and working together for the good of the society. Besides, diversity as a business ethic was another issue associated with the implementation of the strategies. To promote diversity organizations opted to offer aid to all the affected areas.
Effect of the Tragic Event on the Ethical Culture and the Society in the United States
Paige, (2013) asserts that this tragic event has positively affected the ethical culture in the United States. The catastrophic brought people from different states and culture to assist the affected community. As a result, the ethical culture cohesion was strengthened and intensified. The hurricane also resulted in the decline of the gross domestic product of the affected society. This decrease was attributed to the interference of the economic activities conducted in the affected areas.
Other Lessons from This Event
One of the lessons learnt from this tragedy was the development of adequate and efficient evacuation measures. The state and the federal government have to develop other modes of evacuation since the evacuation measures by vehicles are inadequate. Thus, catastrophic helicopters should be reserved for evacuating people before a tragedy occurs. Additionally, society education concerning tragedy mitigation should be facilitated to enlighten people. This action will aid in minimizing the death rate of individuals during tragic events.
