Remember to enter the Project Group number and Submitter's name above. A hard disk is organized with fixed sectors with 512 bytes per sector, 96 sectors per track, 110 tracks per surface, and 8 usable surfaces. a) Calculate how much disk space (in sectors, tracks, and surfaces) will be required to store 300,000 120-byte logical records. Ignore any file header record(s) and track indexes, and assume that records cannot span two sectors. b) Assume that the disk rotates at 7200 rpm. A processor reads one sector from the disk using interrupt-driven I/O, with one interrupt per byte. If it takes 2.5 mu s to process each interrupt, what percentage of the time will the processor spend handling I/O? (Disregard seek time.) c) Repeat the calculation of part (b) using DMA, and assume one interrupt per sector.

Explanation / Answer

answer :

a) part

120 byte - logical records and per sector stores 512 bytes then

each sector can store maximum = 120 * 4 = 480 bytes (means each sector can store 4 logical records )

then

no. of sectors required to store 300,000 and each sector can store only 4 logical record = 300000/4

we get 75,000sectors

no of tracks required for 75,000 sectors and there are 96 sectors per track = 75000/96 = 782 tracks

no. of surfaces required for 782 tracks and there are 110 tracks per surface = 782 / 110= 8 surfaces
