Question

Read this draft of a short discussion of earthquakes in Turkey and the instructor comments on pages 51-52. Discuss each comment with a partner and then decide whether it is R (reasonable) or U (unreasonable). If you are unsure, indicate this with a question mark (2). Consider then if and how you would revise the text. Finally, write a new draft, taking into account other advice given in the unit. Turkey is located in a region that is shaken by severe earth- quakes. @They occurred almost every year. @Central Anatolian Fault Zone is one of the most active fault zones in the world, and it lies along the northern part of the country, going from south east to northwest. The reason of that most of these severe earth quakes causes a lot of damage and death of many people is not only the nature of the fault zone, but also that there are many cities and highways settled on it. Because many cities have been built on or within the vicinity of geologic fault. 6 They are unquestionably prone to earthquakes 7 There are many earthquakes each year. The most serious damage occurred in August 1999. 9 It affected a big area and caused approximately 20,000 people death and millions dollars physical damage in three cities. Too prevent such big damage and loss in the future, researchers have been researching the 1999 earthquake. They looked at the excellent seismic records from recording stations near the epicenter of earthquake and saw that there were signs of earthquake. They might help to develop some early warning systems to be aware of the upcoming shak inas. Even these can make warnings as short as 10 seconds before the shakings, if there is a well-planned evacuation they may, at least, help to decrease the death toll of an earthquake.

Explanation / Answer

Answer: See the comments below:

1. R.

Explanation: It is quite resaonable to specify the overall area in figures affected by earthquake and names of damaged cities. It will make description more accurate.

2. R.

Explanation: There is nothing specified that relates Turkey with central anatolian fault zone. Facts should be specified that show Turkey lying in this zone. Giving a map will be a good option.

3. R.

Explanation: Extent of damage should be clear.

4. R.

Explanation: Description is silient about the actual figures and facts. Specifying these will help authorities assess the situation more better.

5. R.

Explanation: When I am planning for a warning system, it is required to spcify what kind of warnings and and signs will be used to indicate about earthquakes.

6. R.

Explanation: Doing so will bring more clarity.

7. R.

Explanation: When we talk about studying about some kind of data, reliability of data is a major factor. Hence, it should be properly established.

8. R.

Explanation: Will remove ambiguity.

9. R.

Explanation: When putting a fact, why exaggerate it.

10. U.

Explanation: It doesn't need to be removed. Instead can be rephrased to precisely say number of earthquake per year on an average.

11. U.

Explanation: Don't need to be changed.

12. R.

Explanation: Some possible features can possibly be provided.

13. U.

Explanation: Don't need to be changed.

14. R.

Explanation: Its proper to recheck the draft before presenting it.
