Research has shown that most people cannot accurately identify an individual from a driver’s license photo. For ex, one study found that most people will accept an ID with any photo that has a pic of a person with the same gender and race as the presenter.
a) It has also been demonstrated that when photos are included on credit cards, the fraud rate drops significantly. Explain this apparent contradiction.
b) Your easily amused author frequents an amusement park that provides each season pass holder with a plastic card similar to a credit card. The park takes a photo of each season pass holder, but the photo doesn’t appear on the card. Instead, when the card is presented for admission to the park, the photo appears on a screen that is visible to the park attendant. Why might this approach be better than putting the photo on the card?
Explanation / Answer
a) It is not possible for the fraud rates to get dropped with the photo being printed on the card itself as it is very difficult to identif someone with a very small, blurred, poor quality photo printed on and of the cards. It is almost impossible to identify an individual with that. No one even pays that much attention in comparing the photo on the credit card with the original person using it. So in that case, it doesn't look as as if having a photo on a credit card will reduce the fraud rates.
b) It is a better approach as the image of the card holder is visible to the attendant on a screen which provides a pretty clear and large image of the user. The attendant can easily compare the image shown on the screen with the face of the person using the card. With the increase in the quality and size of image, it becomes easy for the attendant to identify that the real user is using the card or not. Therefore, this approach is considered to be better than putting the photo on the card.
