Internet Database

Database Definition: Database is a well structured collection of data kept on computers/servers such that the data can be accessed, processed, managed and updated easily.

We will understand what is a data at first. Data is the facts or statistical information collected for various types of analysis and conclusion. For example customer review data. Consider a company has created a website for their customers such that the customers can write their reviews about the services provided by the company. So, the company can collect certain information from this website such as review of each customer, username, customer location, rating given by customer etc. And after collecting this data, company may be interested in knowing what the customers are talking about the services provided by the company, are they happy? Or are they unsatisfied? Do the reviews change with respect the location of the customers? And many more types of analysis. There are very different types of data, for example consider the database of wikipedia, wikipedia’s database will be containing information or conceptual data for various topics. And so, for all the websites, we have a different kind of data and databases.

Types of database:

In today’s date, there are mainly two types of databases

Relational databases

NoSQL databases

Relational databases (RDBMS):

Relational databases store data in tabular format. Data is stored in rows and columns. There exists certain relations between tables. RDBMS are very old format of databases used for storing the data. RDBMS is well known for storing the data in structured way. There was a time when RDBMS was the only option for storing the data. But due to today’s data size RDBMS is not considered the best option for storing the data.

NoSQL databases:

Experts say that, the data size is getting doubled every two years.Today everyone uses internet, facebook, Twitter, linkedin. Everyone posts comments, reviews, blogs. Companies like amazon have millions of users, they need a reliable and fault tolerant system/technology for handling the data. So for storing, processing, and analysing this big-data, we need some reliable systems.

So basically following are the drawbacks of RDBMs:

RDBMS runs on single server/computer. So, the size of the data which we store on single server is limited.

If this single server is damaged, then whole system stops.

Speed is another important issue. Single server is having limitation of speed as well.

So,RDBMs can not provide reliability, scalability,fault tolerance for handling huge amount of data.

These drawbacks are overcome by NoSQL databases. NoSQL database stands for “Not only SQL”. The main advantages of NoSQL database are they provide reliability, scalability,fault tolerance for handling huge amount of data. NoSQL databases use distributed systems rather than using a single server which makes them Scalable, reliable and fault tolerant.

NoSQL databases are open-source and available at low cost. Hadoop Distributed file system , Hbase, Cassandra these are the examples of NoSQL databases. Due to this every company wants to shift to Nosql databases rather than using RDBMS.
