Question
Select a popular press magazine, such as Men’s Health, Oprah, Glamour, etc., and identify a health-related article (popular press article can be located online). Locate the original research article cited in the health-related article from the popular press magazine. Read the original research article and compare the findings with the information presented in the popular press magazine. Discuss the reliability of information in popular press magazines compared to that of primary sources, specifically original research.
Remember to cite your sources.
Explanation / Answer
The popular press magazine which I have considered for the research is “Prevention”. On Jun 23rd, 2018, an article by Marygrace Taylor on “10 crazy side effects you might experience on the Keto Diet” came that gives an idea on side effects of ketosis diet.
In the first point itself, it mentions about Kristen Mancinelli, author of Ketogenic Diet in 2015, who explained that fat becomes the primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates which bring in dizziness and sickness in the initial few weeks.
Interpretation from the original source: The facts that are provided is actually cited by the author in his book. The data provided is reliable.
In the 2nd point, where it is focused that one will lose weight rapidly as carbs hold more water than fat or protein when you don’t intake carbs, so weight reduction will be faster. This is cited by Becky Kerkenbush, a clinician dietician. It also refers to an Italian study where 20,000 obese adults lost 12 pounds in 25 days.
Interpretation from the original source: In the Nutrition & Metabolism Journal, 2012, Cappello and his associates studied 19,036 patients, not 20,000 patients which are misinformed.
In the third point, people feel less hungry and the reason is mentioned unknown.
Interpretation from the original source: The original journal from Obesity reviews, 2015, Gibson and his associates did a meta-analysis and systematic study have cited the reason for fewer cravings.
Thus, it is illustrated that popular magazines do provide information but relying on them fully is difficult as some information is either hidden or exaggerated. The reliability factor is less in case of press magazines.
