Question

Fred Sanguinen is a New York City produce broker. Ned santini is a 19 Year old college student who works for Sanguine from 4:00 am until 7:00 am each weekend before he attends classes at Pace University. Fred has instructed Ned on the proper packing of produce as follows: "Look, put the bad and small cherries at the bottom. Do the same with the strawberries and blueberries. Put the best fruit on top dollar on all that I sell" Ned is uncomfortable about the instructions, but, as he explains to his roommate, "It is not me doing it. Im just folloing orders. Besides, I need the job"

Should Ned just follow instructions?

Is the manner in whoch the fruit is packed unethical?

Would you do it?

why or why not?

Is anone really harmed by the practice?

Explanation / Answer

Being ethical means trying to evaluate the incidences in the light of what one feels is morally right or wrong. Ethics can therefore make one understand the following:

Ethical standards, whether formal or informal have changed considerably. We cannot say that Ethical Standards have fallen. It is the reverse - - the issue is not just having the standards but living up to them. On the other side, some rules and frames that are formulated by the law is termed as legal but it does not stand by the ethical side like in the above case. When the bad fruits are placed below the good ones, it can certainly attract customers. In fact, the business is also legal by all means because the fruits brought to the market are original and it is left upon the discretion of the consumers whether or not to buy the produce.

In this regard, although as per the legal framework, Ned may follow the instructions but somewhere ethically, he is still not doing the right thing. It is more of a window-dressing activity that is being instructed by his. Boss. However, the manner in which the fruit is packed is unethical though not illegal. Besides, had I been in Ned place, I would have first try to gauge how important the job is to me. While initially working with Fred for a while, I would gradually plan to shift myself from such an act because somewhere even I shall be responsible for misleading the consumers otherwise. In terms of hurting anyone, although no one would be hurt seriously but certainly, the faith of the customers in our produce shall be breached. The customer may end buying a certain quantity of fruits without really checking the whole lot till the bottom. When the seller undertakes the malpractice of mixing the bad cherries or other fruits with that of the good ones, it shall end up hurting the feelings and trust of the customers. Moreover in long run, such activities would surface and result into the declination of the overall business.
