Question
Titanoya Motors is a joint venture company created through a partnership between a large wel established Japanese automotive company and a relatively new German electric car company with outstanding battery and engine technology. They are having lots of problems at their factory in Thailand. Interviews with workers reveals comments such as: "Titanoya managers are good with spreadsheets and calculators but terrible with people. They are constantly monitoring and assessing you. They don't try to help or fix problems." “Titanova treats their workers like disposable toys, measuring performance and removing workers who can't do what they want them to do without giving them a chance to improve". Despite such comments, Titanoya has had a lot of local workers willing to take jobs at the Thai factory. The Joint Venture is often perceived to be taking advantage of this surplus labour through high turnover of workers, who are made to feel inadequate and to blame for losing their jobs The concerns of the working environment spreads further than the local workers. Global pressure group, the International Rights of Workers (IRW), has criticised Titanoya for providing poor working conditions and for exploiting workers who come from rural backgrounds without enou education or experience to know what thev are entitled to. In a 32 page report "The Titanoya they don't want you to know about" the IRW suggests that workers are being paid less than the minimum wage, were forced to live in overcrowded dormitories close to the factory and that some workers had committed suicide because of the pressure that the company is putting their workers under. Some workers allege that foreign and local managers harass women and local minorities and discriminate for promotions on the basis of gender and personal relationships Answer TWO questions ONLY from these three questions for Case Study Two: 1) Explain Feedback, Feedforward and Concurrent Control and suggest how Titanoya could have used 2 out of the 3 Control theories to avoid these quality issues. 2) Explain Transactional Leadership and suggest how Titanoya could use Transactional Leadership to make their factory more effective. 3) Explain Scientific Management and suggest how Titanoya could use the 2 out of the 4 principles of Scientific Management to improve results at their factoryExplanation / Answer
Feedback- This is the process of reviewing the performance to ensure that the completed activities or task has met the standards.
Concurrent- this process involves monitoring of the employees’ activities when they are in-progress to ensure that they meet the quality standards.
Titanoya Motors could have used concurrent and feedforward control theories to ensure that the workforce with inadequate experience and education performs the job functions to meet the quality standards. Since the recruitment process has no systematic approach, feedforward control measures can be used in the hiring process to avoid recruited employees who does not have enough experience to perform the job. Concurrent measure ensures that the tasks are performed with high quality when the work is in-progress.
2. Transactional Leadership- This leadership style uses both rewards and punishments to ensure that the followers comply with the instructions. They are practical leaders and focus on extrinsic motivation. Titanoya Motors could have used Transactional leadership more effectively in handling their employees by rewarding them for their good behavior and performance; punishing the employees as disciplinary action. This way, Titanoya could have addressed the concerns of the employees at the same time maintained quality in the performance and production.
