Question

Need solution process. answer is 8128 seconds

A given computer has 2 gigabytes of memory and 125 gigabytes of hard disk. someone has a collection of files made of music, photos and videos. The size of each music file is 510 kilobytes, the size of each photo files is 75 megabytes and the size of each video file is 1500 megabytes.

d. suppose that data is downloaded from the internet directly to the computer at a constant rate of 128 megabits per second. how much time would it take to fill-up the entire computer memory and hard disk?

Explanation / Answer

Computer memory is hereby describing random access memory or RAM. RAM is used to temporary store the data while the Hard Disk drive stores the data permanently. After the data is stored from RAM to Hard Disk drive, the RAM memory is cleared.

The size of each music, photo and image files are irrelevant here as the data rate or the download rate from the internet is constant, which is 128 Mbps or (128/8) MBps or 16 MBps as we know 1 byte = 8 bits.

To fill up the entire computer memory, both the hard disk and RAM needs to be filled as RAM also stores data.

So, total (125+2) GB or 127 GB or (127*1024) MB of data needs to be downloaded from the internet to fill the computer memory (1 GB = 1024 MB).

So, the required time is ((127*1024)/16) seconds = 8128 seconds.

Hope this helps.
