Question

You hold a small flat mirror L2 = 0.40m in front of you and can see your reflection several times in that mirror because there is a full-length mirror L1 = 1.3m behind you (Figure 1) . 1) The closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the reflection of your face. Determine the distance between you and the image. 2) The next closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the reflection of your back. Determine the distance between you and the image. 3) The next closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the second reflection of your face. Determine the distance between you and the image.

Explanation / Answer

1) The closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the reflection of your face. Determine the distance between you and the image.

Distance = 0.4 + 0.4 = 0.8m

2) The next closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the reflection of your back. Determine the distance between you and the image.

Back is formed at a distance of 2.6m in the behind mirror from me. In the small mirror the distance = 3 + 0.4 = 3.4m

3) The next closest image that you can see in the small mirror is the second reflection of your face. Determine the distance between you and the image.

The image of the face in the mirror behind us is formed at a distance = 2.1 + 1.3 = 3.4m

Distance between us and the small mirror = 3.8 + 0.4 = 4.2m
