Question

The Army of the Nation of Whynot has a plan to propel small vehicles across the battlefield by shooting them, from behind, with a machine gun. They've hired you as a consultant to help with an upcoming test. A 200kg test vehicle will roll along frictionless rails. The vehicle has a tall "sail" made of ultrahard steel. Previous tests have shown that a 20.0g bullet traveling at 300m/s rebounds from the sail at 200m/s . The design objective is for the cart to reach a speed of 18.0m/s in 30.0s . You need to tell them how many bullets to fire per second from the machine gun. Note that your answer should be a rate, which can be fractional, rather than a quantity, which must be an integer.

Explanation / Answer

The Army of the nation of Why not should be called the nation of people who don't think.

You didn't give me any units so I can't do this problem or help you out.

but here's something to help you figure it out. You said the bullets rebound (they won't do that but okay)

(Mtest_vehicle*V of test vehicle + Mbullet*Vofbullet) in the inital state = (Mtest_vehicle*V of test vehicle + Mbullet*Vofbullet) in the final state

Vfinal of the test vehicle = V intial +Mbullet(Vi - Vf)/Mtestvehicle

notice this takes on the form of y = mx + b

the slope is 1 and Vinital is x

Now be sure to hit in the center, otherwise you will create a torque and you don't want that.
