Question 5: Effect of electric field
Reset the simulation and return the x-component of velocity to +5.0 x 106 m/s. Now, if you increase the electric field from +2.0 kV/m (+2.0 kN/C) to +4.0 kV/m, how does that affect:
(a) the electron's acceleration in the x direction;
(b) the electron's acceleration in the y direction (how can you test this?); and
(c) the time of flight?
Indicate roughly the factor by which each quantity is changed (in-your-head reasoning as opposed to detailed calculations). Justify your answers. When finished, change the value of and run the simulation to check your thinking.
Explanation / Answer
apply ma = Eq
if E increases, accleration also increases,
here as E is doubled, a lso doubles
b. a = 2*4000*1.6*10^-19/9.11*10^-31
a = 1.405*(10^15) m/s^2
c.t= 2u/g
t = 2*5*10^6/9.8
t = 1.0204 secs
