10. Suppose, in your employment as an engineer, you discover that some of your colleagues have been involved in kickback schemes with suppliers, which are in violation of state law. Would you feel you have an ethical obligation to do something, or would you feel you should keep silent since you are not directly involved? Suppose you decide something should be done and go to your boss about it, but you are told to keep quiet? What do you do then, since you know a violation of law has occurred? Does knowledge of an unethical act make you a part owner of the ethics problem?

Explanation / Answer

As an engineer, I have an ethical obligation to do something about the ethically incorrect act which is in violation of the state law. The professional code of ethics for engineers is to demonstrate honesty and integrity at all times. Since engineering has direct impact on the quality of life of the people, it is important that engineers maintain high standards in their profession. Though I am not directly involved, my profession is to ensure that all other colleagues maintain their ethical standards. Hence, I would do something about it and not keep silent. Even though my boss asks me to keep quiet, I would not be quiet. The knowledge that something is happening unethically makes me part of it. Any consequences that may result in future would also impact me. Hence, I would be a whistleblower in this situation. I would pass on the information of the ethical violation to the legal authorities without disclosing my identity to protect myself at the same time adhere to the professional ethics.
