5. Suppose two hosts, A and B, are separated by 20,000 kilometers and are connected by a directed link R-2 Mbps. Suppose the propagation speed over the link is 2.5 * 108 meters/sec. a. Calculate the bandwidth-delay product, R * dprop b. Consider sending a file of 800,000 bits from Host A to Host B. Suppose the file is sent continuously as one large message. What is the maximum number of bits that will be in the link at any given time? Provide an interpretation of the bandwidth-delay product. What is the width of a bit in the link? Derive a general expression for the width of a bit in terms of the propagation speed s, the transmission rate R, and the length of the link m. c. d. e.

Explanation / Answer

a.

Two hosts A and B are connected with a diect link.

Distance between the hosts A and B d=20,000km = 2*107

Tx rate between And B R = 2*106 bps

Propagation Speed of the link between A and B s = 2.5*108 m/sec

Formula to calculate propagation delay

Dprop = d/s = 2*107 / 2.5*108 = 0.08sec

BW-delay product R* dprop = 2*106 * 0.08 = 16*104 bits

Therefore BW-delay product is 160,000 bits.

b.

File is transmitted fro Host A to host B continously as one large message.

Sizeo of the file = 800,000 bits = 8*105 bits

Transmission rate of the direct link between A and B = R = 2*106 bps

The max number of bit that the link can have is independent of the file size.

It is dependent and BW-delay product.

R*dprop = 2*106 * 0.08 = 16*104 bits

Therefore, the max number of bits at a given time will be 160,000 bits.

c.

The max number of bits on the tx line is equal to the product of BW and delay

d.

Tx rate between And B R = 2*106 bps

Propagation Speed of the link between A and B s = 2.5*108 m/sec

Length of 1 bit on the tx line can be calculate using formula S/R.

Length of 1 bit = S/R = Tx rate between And B R = 2*106 bps

Propagation Speed of the link between A and B s = 2.5*108/ 2*106

= 125 m/bit

Therfore, length of 1 bit is 125 meters.

e.

The length of the link = m meters

The propagation speed = S m/s

The transmission rate = R bps

The width of a bit is independent of the link length. It is dependent on propagation speed and tx rate and equal to thei ratio.

Theefore, general expression for the width of bits is S/R.
