Traceroute is used to find the path or in other words to get the list of routers.
In ICMP , TTL(time to live) is used to determine the number of routers in apth from source to destination.
In start TTL is 1 , when packet reaches router it decrement TTL value by 1 and discard the packet when TTL reaches 0 returning TTL exceeded or TTL expired message. Next time when packet is send it is given TTL =2 and so on till it reaches destination.
