Explanation / Answer
With the advent of globalisation and advancement in communication technology options available to organisations for employment of human resource have become exceedingly multidimensional and flexible. With every organisation looking at reducing wastages through minimization of input cost and maximization of output, it is understandable that human resource which is one of the largest resources within every organisation, shall undergo extensive scrutiny for optimal utilisation.
This has both positive as well as negative connotations force as it serves to provide much wider access to opportunities available but at the same time greatly increases competition. Organizations have their personal agenda of maximization of profits and exploit the situation to their advantage, by trying to obtain the best possible talent at the lowest possible pay package. This has also resulted in organisations adopting higher level of segregation of work to accommodate further identification of jobs requiring low levels of skill, and employing lower paid or contingent staff as necessitated to practice lean initiatives. Contingent workers itself poses serious threat to full time employee as they are considerably cheaper, helping companies to cut costs extensively along with simultaneous benefit from lower training costs and cost from essential employee benefits for permanent employees in the form of pensions, Healthcare and all other benefits mandatory under statutory regulations. This results in a situation where not only companies exploit employees by paying salaries not commensurate with the level of skill required and the effort to generate the given output, but serious competition from other employable candidates leading to compromise on fair and expected salaries and benefits, by most employees.
Another major factor is the serious imbalance in compensation packages of the executive class as compared to every other job in an organisation irrespective of its relevance to the success and sustenance of an organisation. This is a discriminatory practice which is prevalent in almost every organisation with no action being taken as it receives support from various stakeholders in the organisation as they deem it in their best interest.
Given the various disadvantages that exist for fair and equitable employment facilities with commensurate compensation, it becomes essential that employees have some kind of means to control and avoid being exploited or subjected to unfair and unjust treatment within an organisation. It was this situation that lead to the formation of employee unions as employees joining together as1 combined force to combat unfair treatment at the hands of employers. Unionization even within any company is a result of employees the existing work conditions or terms as unfair and answers leading to disadvantage for loss to the concerned employee or employees. By forming or being part of a union, employees can to a large extent avoid exploitation and control discriminatory practices which may exist in an organisation, initiating action against the organisation through the union which has greater power and resources to ensure corrective action and prevalence of Justice. Therefore, by enrolling with the union employees get the right to bargain collectively regarding work conditions or terms participate in and organise labour organisations of their choice. However, with unions becoming increasingly strong with exceptional power to control the productivity and future operations of an organisation it has resulted in exploitation of this power by the leaders of the unions. Leaders may accept personal favours and bribes from the organisations instead of barganing for the best possible terms and conditions of employment for all concerned. It may also negatively impact the economy due to serious disadvantage resulting to an organisation from excessive interference in operations and control over labour by unions.
I would strongly support Unionisation as it is important to ensure non discriminatory and fair and equitable treatment of all employees but ensure that the management of the union has inbuilt monitoring processes to control actions of the leaders and ensure the union effectively achieves the major goals it is formed for.
