1. Packet sniffing can be a controversial subject. Discuss any issues related to ethics that might arise when an organization monitors the electronic activity of its employees.

Answer)

Packet sniffing is the method of capturing the packets and recording them when data flow to and from the network of interconnected computers. Packet sniffing is similar to tapping a telephone in a computer network. Packet sniffing can be used by the employer to record employee activities and perform diagnostics and troubleshoot problems on the network. So, Packet sniffing can be used to see all information that is being passed to the network by the employees. A packet sniffing can be used by the employer to record all or some activities such as:

a) Which websites the employees visit

b) What actions does the employee perform on the websites

c) Who does employee send email to

d) What the email contains

e) What downloaded file contains

f) How is the computer data used such as audio, video streaming and download.

There are ethical issues involved if the company will regard to Packet sniffing in all of these as a lot of personal information of the employees will be involved in visiting websites and sending emails. It is better to block websites which the employer thinks employee should not have access to rather than using Packet sniffing. As the privacy of the employee is also an important issue and Packet sniffing does not care about this, thus the employer should record the employee data to a certain level not recording the websites visits and the email content sends. The employer may block the downloaded data and audio, video streaming, but should no use audio, video streaming to tap the computer network. This will lead to employee trust issues as then the employer will not be trustworthy enough. Also, employees maybe informed that the employer is keeping track of some of the data related to company resource usages, thus thereby also mandating the employees to do nothing unethical.
