Discuss the varying degree of ethics found in organizations you have worked for and how these cultures affected you and / or your work. Then, discuss how you know you are part of an ethical organization.

You have completed a report for your supervisor that outlines a problem that cannot be solved easily or quickly. About one week later the same report is circulated throughout the company that has been altered significantly. You suspect your supervisor made changes to undermine the severity of the problem. Do you have an ethical obligation to speak up? Discuss how you would handle this situation.

Explanation / Answer

The companies that I have worked for have harboured different internal culture and work environment as well. But, while there are a varying number of factors available to be able to look at the similarities, there are certain differences that were present as well.

The ethical environment that was followed by the company had varying degrees of implication. Since I work in the BIG DATA field, there is a requirement for the companies to follow the ethical standards of the industry as good as they can. Certainly, the different business’ have featured some of these qualities and the management in their ethical framework as well. We can say that the differences in the ethical culture that is followed in the companies range from utilitarian to professional autonomy. The employees are allowed to make their own decisions as far as the best ethical pathway to be chosen needs to be considered. The fact that the companies that I have worked for the need to work with the sensitive data they collect from the general population, there needs to be an ethical framework in place, one, which does not provide the expression of misconduct and works on the principles of morality and justice. I worked in the HR department which was tasked with the regulation of not just the employee appraisal system but their ethical misconducts as well. Therefore, being in that position allowed me to be able to take into account all the uses of the different doctrines of the ethical framework the company selected to work with as well as its implications on their structural and functional obligations.

For the presented situation, the best course of action would be to first speak with the superior in person without taking further actions because, if there is a chance certain differences could be resolved at that level, we must take it. Secondly, there could have been a difference of opinions between yourself and the superior in which case it is best to communicate the problem.

But, once we are certain that the superior is trying to create false reports or is not justified in his changes. We have to take certain steps which may involve going behind the back of our superior and taking this problem further up the chain of commands. We have to make sure that our actions are in no way related to whistleblowing as that is an ethical misconduct in itself and the best way to solve the problem is communication, be it with the superior or any other concerned authorities.
