The use of technology has significantly impacted organizational communication. The positive impact of technology on communication is that real time communication is possible even in case of those organizations in which employees are working in different locations. Take the example of a technology company whose software engineers are located in India and the marketing team is located in USA. Both the software team and the marketing team members can interact use technological tools like Skype, Lync etc. Thus technology has made communication more convenient and the constraint of distance has been effectively removed.
In terms of negative impacts technology has led to reduced human face to face interactions and so inter-personal relationships are not as strong in case of technology enabled communication when compared to face to face interaction being done by employees. When employees interact in person then a better exchange of ideas take place as factors like body language comes into play.
Technology has also impacted both verbal and non-verbal cues that are used to interpret a message. As can be seen the impact of technology is more significant in case of non-verbal cues. Technology has rendered the use of non-verbal cues in communication insignificant. People who use technological tools to communicate now no longer rely on non verbal cues like gestures, body language and other such cues to determine the thinking of the other person. Technology has made communication more non-personal and due to this non-verbal cues are no longer relevant. For example non verbal cues like nodding in agreement will hint that the idea is being accepted. Non verbal cue like folded arms shows disinterest. These cues are now no longer being used as technology has reduced the amount of face to face interaction.
