Goal

• To encourage students to be alert to, and reflective of, leadership in our world in a way that integrates real world observations, personal reflections and course material.

Approach and Format

• Choose two leaders for discussion. At least one of the leaders should be someone you know personally. It would be beneficial to pick leaders that you admire and would like to gain further insight to. For each of the leaders describe their approach to leadership, why you admire them and what makes them admirable leaders. On this latter point, explain why they are effective as leaders. In doing this, relate the leaders to concepts in the first few chapters of the text to help describe/explain their leadership (one or more of the following concepts may be useful: nature of leadership, inter-cultural leadership, leadership traits, leader behaviour and motivation). Finally, briefly explain what you have learned about leadership from these two leaders.

• Discuss the above issues in about 4 pages (give or take), single-spaced.

• Please identify any information sources used.

Explanation / Answer

To understand the leadership quality, let’s first understand the meaning of leader and leadership qualities.

A leader is the person, who leads a group of person from the front for any particular purpose or intent, while demonstrating some of the unique qualities or attributes, who inspires and influences its subordinates. These qualities are something rare or not so common qualities and hence there could be a single leader in a mass or group of people. A leader earns the trust and respects from its subordinates or followers and this is one of the greatest attribute or character which makes any leader class apart from the group of people or masses.

There is a famous proverb that leaders are not made but they are born as leader, which is not entirely true as there are a lot of examples in the history where a person living an ordinary life in his or her childhood, develops himself/herself to become an effective leader in due course of his or her succeeding career. Some of the burning examples in this category of leaders could be the great Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther king and Abraham Lincoln. Despite having an ordinary childhood, they developed themselves as very effective leader to support and lead their respective nations to the path of glory. They had a great mass following, who can support them with blindly without thinking anything. Let’s take an example of Martin Luther king and Mahatma Gandhi to understand their leadership qualities and traits in more detail.

Martin Luther King- Martin Luther king had a great vision and vision for the equal civil rights of all the citizens of United States of America. He had seen and realized the challenges and plights of Negro community who were denied the equal civil rights and it made him to lead all the deprived people to ask and demand for equal civil rights in the country, through a non violent movement. He was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and adopted his style of leadership where he travelled to almost all parts of USA, wherever he felt like injustice or racial discrimination is happening to black people. Despite facing so many challenges and ordeals, he was not deterred by these hardships and continued his fight for the justice of black people. Some of the distinct leadership qualities which he had developed over the years were his communication, his mass connect appeal and his honesty which was clearly acknowledged by his sea of supporters.

Mahatma Gandhi- Mahatma Gandhi had developed as a mass leader after encountering the multiple challenges over the years. In his early career, he had faced the severe racial discrimination and it made him to develop as a strong leader and also empathize with the fellow citizens who were facing the hardships due to the British rule in India. He had led many movements like “Quit India”, Non co-operation movement and much more non-violent movements. He had a massive mass support and some of the peculiar qualities which he possessed as a leader was his, impeccable mass connect appeal, motivating the crowd and charisma to inspire and influence the millions. He was a great communicator and never bothered for his personal comfort while taking up the causes for the downtrodden and deprived people in the society.
