Pouncing Paws Doggy Daycare and Spa

Harker Heights, Texas

Pouncing Paws does not have an official mission statement.

Dog daycare, boarding facility, and full service groomer

Pouncing Paws is owned solely by Erin McCracken

Pouncing paws offers pet owners a safe and supervised place to bring their pets. Pet parents like the ability for their dogs to have interaction with other dogs in a safe and supervised location. They also appreciate that their pet is not confined and alone all day while they are at work.

Pouncing Paws also offers boarding of pets within their facility. Be it for a single night or for a month or longer, Pouncing Paws allows for pet parents to go away for work or vacation knowing that their pets are being cared for in a safe and secure environment.

Pouncing Paws also offers a full service grooming salon. Whether it is just a nail trim or a complete spa package, pets are made to feel safe and comfortable while being groomed.

What differentiates Pouncing Paws from other dog daycares is the commitment of the staff to their clients. Each dog is treated like the employees own pet. Owners are made to feel like part of a family and it is reflected in the special personal touches that the business provides in the care of each dog. Each dog has a cubicle where pet parents can leave leashes, treats, food, or toys that they would like to be made available to their furbaby. These cubicles are also where pet parents would receive special notices of upcoming events and special event gifts. Pouncing Paws staff have regular parties for the pets in the daycare for their birthdays and holidays. Dog friendly pot lucks are often thrown where the staff bring homemade foods for the dogs.

Another area that differentiates Pouncing Paws from other dog boarding facilities is that for dogs that are being kenneled for prolonged periods are allowed to be taken home with a staff member for a change of scenery and one on one attention. This helps alleviate pets’ frustration and depression from being separated from their owner.

Pouncing Paws also offers a full service grooming salon. Four full time groomers are employed by Pouncing Paws and are able to perform all grooming services and have been named best Grooming Facility in Central Texas for 8 years running.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of each primary competitor in terms of sales?

The strengths of Pouncing Paws over their competitors is their longevity and level of experience of their employees. Pouncing Paws has been in business over 17 years. They increased their grooming clientele by hiring two additional groomers in 2007. Most of the competitors, with the exception of Petsmart, have been in business as long as Pouncing Paws nor do their competitors have the following that their groomers do.

Pouncing Paws market is directed at the military community. Often military members must deploy or be gone for a variety of reasons and need a place to keep their pet. Pouncing Paws offers that peace of mind that many military members need and want.

Quality: Pouncing Paws excels in the quality of the esthetics of their facility and the services that are offered. They have been named Best Groomers for 8 years and Best Boarding Facility for over 10 years.

Distribution: There is no distribution with this company.

Price: Pouncing Paws is reasonable priced and offers both military discounts and discounted packages for services. In comparison with their competitors, Pouncing Paws falls in midline to what the local market charges.

Production capabilities: Pouncing Paws is able to board 20 dogs in their kennels and have five specialty rooms with different themes and special beds that can accommodate as many as 10 dogs. Their daycare is able to accommodate 25 dogs on a given day. The grooming salon has about 6 – 7 clients per groomer every day and can still accommodate walk ins for simple services like nail clippings, ear cleaning, or anal gland expression.

Reputation: Pouncing Paws reputation in the community is very strong. Located near Fort Hood, Texas, many of their clients are military personnel. They have won various local business awards and have been the feature of various news reports and newspaper coverage.

Products/services: Pouncing Paws offers day care services for pets, full service grooming, and boarding. They also offer various toys, clothing, collars and leashes, as well as a variety of pet treats for sale in their retail section at the front of the facility.

Does the chosen business have a competitive advantage? Please explain. Pouncing Paws does have a competitive edge in that they have developed a strong following in the community through word of mouth and a loyal clientele. Because of how long they have in business, many of the newer competitors find it difficult to pull customers from Pouncing Paws client base.

What are the responsibilities and expertise of each manager? Pouncing Paws’ owner is also the manager for the business. Her responsibilities include: managing the business, overseeing employees, training, Accounts payable and receivable, maintaining stock, hiring for services needed for upkeep of the facility, marketing, and sales.

What role will they play in managing personnel and resources? Erin McCracken manages all personnel and resources and directs the staff in utilizing those resources.

Be sure to outline the skills and talents that each person possesses (or will possess).

Does the chosen business provide a service or product? Pouncing Paws provides multiple services including: daycare services, boarding services, full service grooming, and retail items.

What are the specific benefits of the product or service from the customers' perspective? With daycare, pet parents benefit from the commitment of the staff to their clients.

Another area that benefits Pouncing Paws’ customers are the dog boarding facilities. Pet parents are relieved that for dogs that are being kenneled for prolonged periods are allowed to be taken home with a staff member for a change of scenery and one on one attention.

Customers are pleased that their pets come home smelling wonderful and looking beautiful.

How does the product or service meet the consumer needs? The daycare meets the consumer needs by providing the supervision for their pet that is necessary in their daily lives. The boarding facility provides a safe and secure place for their furbaby that still allows for interaction with both people and other pets. The grooming facility meets the consumer’s need for convenience and a place for services that seem difficult for the owner to perform.

Explain the production process for the service or product. Upon arriving at the daycare, dogs and their parents are greeted. The dog is then taken to one of the play rooms based upon their size and temperament. A rotation then begins where all the dogs in a given play room are taken outside for a half an hour to play and relieve themselves. They are then brought in and provided water to drink and a treat. Then the next play room is taken out and so on and so forth. At the end of the day, the dog parent is greeted and the dog is brought up to the entrance lobby.

For the grooming salon, the pets are brought into the grooming entrance and greeted. The pet is placed in a kennel until they are groomed and following grooming are placed back in that kennel until the owner arrives for pick up. Most of these clients are scheduled, however for simple things like nail trims, customers are taken care of immediately and not kenneled.

For boarding services, reservations are required. Pets and owners are greeted upon arrival. Parents are asked to fill out contact and emergency information on a general form, feeding instructions and any other special considerations are expressed and notated. Any medications that the pet may be on are also discussed and noted. The owner is then escorted to where their pet will be boarded and allowed to say their goodbyes. When picking up, dogs again are brought to the lobby and released to their owners along with any personal belongings that they may have.

How will the chosen business reach their customers?Provide a written description of the marketing strategy for the chosen business.Be sure to include all the key components of a marketing strategy.
