Jack Ma, Founder and Chairman, Alibaba Group Jack Ma knows a thing or two about creating new opportunities. A self-made billionaire, Ma was ranked #33 on the Forbes billionaire list for 2015, He got there by orchestrating the development of Alibaba, a mega-e-commerce company that went public on the New York Stock Exchange NYSE) wi ating out erstwhile mega-IPOs including Facebook, Visa, and General Motors (GM) ith the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history, be Jack Ma was born as Ma Yun in Hangzhou, in China's Zhejiang Province, about 100 miles from one of the world's largest cities, Shanghai Jack's entrepreneurship efforts began at an early age. When he was only 12 years old, Ma recognized the tremendous opportunities he could create for himself if he learned English. To accomplish his goal, he would ride his bike for 40 minutes every day-regardless of the weather-to an international hotel in Hangzhou's West Lake district where he could fraternize with foreigners, offering his services as a tour guide free of charge. In return, he learned English. Just as important, he learned about the rest of the world firsthand. He quickly realized that the foreigners he spoke with had a different story to tell than did his native Chinese teachers and textbooks, which presented reality through the distorted lens of communism In 1979. Ma met an Australian couple and became pen pals with their two children. In 1985 the family invited Ma to visit them "Down Under." further opening up Jack's eyes to the way the rest of the world-especially the Western world-lived and worked. His efforts to seek out education and thinking and his life opportunities beyond the borders of his own country changed his Like virtually all entrepreneurs, Ma faced a lot of failure and disappointment in his early working years. From flunking his university admission exam to being rejected in his application to become secretary to a Kentucky Fried Chicken general manager, Ma learned the hard way that success rarely happens overnight In 1995. Ma was able to move to the United States as an interpreter for a trade delegation. It was in Seattle that he first learned about the Internet. Jack and a friend quickly discovered that China was not yet utilizing the Internet, so they launched their own website, called China Pages With virtually zero knowledge of the Internet, or even how to properly use a keyboard, Ma ested $2,00o to start a company. He had enough early success to attract the interest of the state-owned China Telecom, but later parted ways when the communications giant showed little interest in Ma's vision or goals n 1999. Ma courageously ventured out on his own again with a single-minded vision of starting nis own e-commerce corporation. With some close associates who believed in him, and $60.000 Ma and his team went to work. I wanted to have a global company, so I chose a global name. Alibaba is easy to spell, and people everywhere associate that with 'Open, Sesame." the command that Ali Baba used to open doors to hidden treasures in One Thousand and One Nights (Fannin. 2008, online).Explanation / Answer
1) To answer this question, first we have to differentiate the opportunity, innovation and invention. Opportunity is the apparent way of generating unique, novel or desirable products or services that have not been previousy exploited. If the product or service is novel, useful and valuable that is innovation and invention is the product, which will score highly but if it does not reach the market or appeal to consumers then it is rendered useless.
Every organization is designed to gate the results it gets. Poor performance comes from a poorly designed organization. Superior results emerge when strategies, business models, structure, processes, technologies, tools and reward systems fires on all cylinders in syphonic unison.
The world has started noticing it some time back , but when a Chinese ecommerce company created the world's biggest IPO valued at $25 billion in September 2014, it was really an event for everyone to take further notice.
The attaractiveness and potential of the company's business model was never in doubt. In the first two year of their inception, it was successful to raising a fund of $25 billion. The company's vision, as outlined on its website, clearly centers around the power and potential of the internet as a medium for trade and business. The exact wording reads, " from the outset, the companys founders shared a belief that the internet would level the playing by enabling small enterprises to leverage innovation and technology to grow and compete more effectively in the domestci and world economy". Right from the very begining to now, it has done just that by providing the internet platfrom for facilitating trade between small and medium sized traders accross the world.
Jack Ma's vision for the company has constantly evolved and kept pace with the technological changes and innovations happening in the online space. Not only does it provide a platfrom for trade, but also its online payment system called "Alipay", which now controls more than half of the China's online payment market. In addition to Alipay, The Alibaba group now has a portfolio of internet-based businesses targeted towards specific segment and niche areas of online commerce. In that sense I think it is "The Building Approach" to opportunity identification.
2) As the scale and complexity of computing systems increases, application proggrammers must not only be expert in their application domain, but also have the systems knowledge required to address the constraints of parallelism, scale, power, energy and reliability concern. SEEC purposes a novel approach that addresses these constraints by adding a self-awarness dimension to computational model. Self aware computational models automatically adjust their behaviour in response to the environment stimuli to meet user specified goal. The SEEC model is unique in that it supports a decoupled approach where application and systems developers separately contribute to the development of a self-aware system. Using SEEC applications directly specify their goals through a standard progrmming. Jack Ma's vision for the company has constantly evolved and kept pace with the technological changes and innovations happening in the online space. On this content Jack Ma's Alibaba has been varified.
3) Through the Alibaba DAmo Academy, its first global initiative in technology collaboration, the company aims to bankroll some of the most frontier research, ranging from data intelligence internet if things and fintech to quantum computing and human-machine interaction.
The matrix from of organization is helpful in maximizing the strength of both the functional and projectized structers. When it comes to matrix organization, think "two bosses" . Team reports to functional and project manager both. Communication also flows from team. Matrix organization is blend of blend of functional and projectized organization.
In Alibaba the business has been developed as per the requirement and the choice of the customer, and they spread their business to the world wide through their innovativeness and uniqueness of their thinking and altered their business equation based on their domestic and international requirements. Now days the character of a good organizational matrix system is to convey the massage from very low to high end very smoothly and upgreading the organizational structure using technologies. From this side "Alibaba" is updated. The uniqueness of their thought, the innovative manager and overall the thinking of Jack Ma make "Alibaba" a global giant. On that side I think they are following a strong matrix structure. Utilization of resources and proper management skill make their organizational matrix structure a stronger one.
