Telecommuting has been an option for employers for over 20 years now. And while many companies have never offered this option to their employees, other companies have built their entire business processes around the concept of the virtual office. Among other things, trust between management and employees, and control of employees’ workload and productivity have certainly affected who decides to participate in telecommuting. Of the companies who have participated, what worked for them? What didn’t work?

Running a virtual organisation can be very challenging. Team members of the virtual team inside the virtual organisations usually never meet. Alternating chances of these specific employees are very low as they are set apart by huge distances. Language barriers across the globe are also a major issues between employees. Virtual organisations also faces differences in cultures as it is directly based on multiple countries or multiple regions. Maintaining a virtual organisation could be very tough as it is only based Virtually which directly requires a technological e advanced system. If any technological terms fails in the delivery of the services, the overall level of the virtual business would also come down as it won't be accessible without the help of that specific Technology.
Confusion of the timezone as well as differences in the working Times is also one of the major issues in the virtual organisations. Maintaining the overall level of ethics and collaboration as well as implementation of the employee engagement is also very tough as there is no physical place or location in which the employees usually meet. Maintenance of the data and acquiring the overall data system is also very tough as there is no physical contract of the employees to the employer or to the other Employees.
One of the finest example for virtual organisation is air bnb. Air bnb is world's largest stay provider where actually they don't own any of the resources. By specifically creating a virtual environment and having their employees to work from remote locations provided then competitive advantage in the specific market segment where availability of opportunities directly affected its overall business. Company directly offer their services through pre existing structure in the society by using their resources and just moulding the customers to use the existing resources and harvesting the customer needs by creating a totally virtual organisation.
In structure of its operation air bnb implemented telecommuting by a huge margin and get benefited by the same. As company has no requirement of having a physical office its structure could be easily operated with the help of telecommuting and provides additional support to the overall structure of operation in a very effective way.
Company as always shown increment in growth of telecommuting has proven to be very beneficial for this type of structure where availability of a physical operational location is not prominent.
