For each communication task below, write brief answers to the following questions for each scenario: (1) Who is my audience? (2) What is my audience's general attitude toward my subject? And (3) What does my audience need to know? Scenario 1: An advertisement for peanut butter Scenario 2: A request (to the seller) for a price adjustment on a piano that incurred $150 in damage during delivery to a banquet room in the hotel you manage Scenario 3: A cover letter sent along with your resume to a potential employer. List 3 messages you have read, viewed, or listened to lately, For each message answer the following: (1) What is the media/channel combination? (2) What is the general purpose? (3) What is the specific purpose? (4) Did the sender choose an appropriate medium and channel for the message? From last week's reading on workplace etiquette, address the following scenario: Late on a Friday aftermoon, you learn that the facilities department is going to move you and your computer, your desk, and all of your files-to a new office first thing Monday morning. You have an important client meeting scheduled in your office for noon on Monday as you need to finalize some contact details. Your supervisor has already left for the day and you cannot postpone the move. You know your client checks her voicemail over the weekend, so you decide to call and leave a voicemail explaining the situation and ask your client to reschedule for Tuesday Write a transcript of the voicemail you would leave (please use an imaginary contact phone number for yourself and invent any details you might need for the call).Explanation / Answer
Scenario 1 – An advertisement for Peanut Butter
The audience set basically comprises of 3 major sets:
- Peanut Butter consumers who like and consume peanut on a regular level. The degree of consumption may vary from rarely, frequently to always.
- Neutral Customers, who were not really into having Peanut butter but would not really mind having a taste of it after being influenced by the advertisement.
- Peanut butter haters, who do not like Peanut butter and would never think of consuming it ever
Depending on the audience’s likes or dislikes, the attitude towards the ad would vary. The Peanut Butter lovers or regular consumers would like to have a taste of the new product and might even think of switching from their existing brand. The neutral customers might be influenced by the ad and might be tempted to have a taste of it just for trial purposes, or may be simply neutral with no reaction whatsoever. The Peanut Butter detesters would simply ignore or at times feel disgusted with the ad communication.
The audience specifically needs to know the product offering or the quality/features of the peanut butter. The communicated utility of the peanut butter would ultimately decide if consumers switch to this new brand or stick to the old one - it could also be the one which has just been advertised. The offering would decide whether some new customers join the peanut butter bandwagon or not.
Scenario 2
The audience is the manager at the piano store from the piano was bought.
The manager or shopkeeper wouldn’t really be open to the idea of paying damage charges for the set-up of the piano at a hotel. However, he may have had similar experiences in dealing in such enterprise sales transactions while dealing in such bulky items.
The manager would necessarily need to know the extent of the damage and the way the entire set-up operation was taken up. He must be specifically informed about the improper installation carried out by his team and why he should be held accountable for that damage.
Scenario 3
The audience in most cases is the either the Hiring manager or the Recruitment specialist in an organization.
The manager or the recruitment specialist would evaluate the intent shown in the cover letter and try to gauge at a macroscopic level the kind of fit the candidate has for the job opening.
The audience specifically needs to know the motivation levels, the characteristics in the profile which makes it a good match to the role offered. The recruiter or manager should be aware of the key strengths the candidate brings to the table and how he/she can work wonders for the company.

1. Decriminalization of Sec 377 in India
2. The beginning of the 2+2 Talks between India and US
3. The Launch of new cosmetic range by MAC
For 1, the media/channel I came across this news was the daily newspaper that is written media.
The general purpose is spreading the news of the new era of legality of same gender marriage and relationship in India. It is to create the much needed awareness on the topic and how a great section of the population has hailed the verdict.
The specific purpose, is to highlight the social issue which was present in the Indian society and how now this issue has come to happy conclusion, relieving the plight of the entire LGBT community.
Yes, the sender did use the right medium as even today the written media has one of the highest reach in the country and such social issues should reach every strata of the society.
For 2, the media/channel I came across this was on television media on prominent Indian and US news channel.
The general purpose, was to show the strategic plans the 2 countries of India and US for the years to come.
The specific purpose was to strengthen the ties between the 2 nations and project to the world how both the countries plan to grow symbiotically killing terror and unfair trade practices around.
The sender somewhat used the right medium, as the audience in the 2 countries were well informed about this. However, on a world scale the medium was limiting as other countries generally opt for the local vernacular news channels.
For 3, the media/channel used was the Instagram handle of the cosmetic major MAC.
The general purpose was to create a buzz on social media about the launch of the new product line.
The specific purpose was to convert this buzz into actual conversions in sales and having a positive impact on the company’s top and bottom lines.
The sender uses the most appropriate medium. The target audience for the brand is predominantly the tech savvy young crowd who spend most of their time online, especially on social media. The young crowd especially young girls who use MAC products would be enamored to hear of such a launch and would be the first ones to get their hands on this new line of products.
