Roger Ferguson Jr., CEO of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) strongly believes that a diverse workforce is their major strength. He states that having a diverse workforce helped the company to make effective decisions during the economic turmoil with diverse ideas. The diversity statement influence TIAA-CREF daily decision making by arriving at new ideas to approach the problem. This is possible due to the diverse workforce with different perspectives on the same problem. Brainstorming with a diverse workforce will lead to various alternate options for solving a problem and assists managers in daily decision making at the company.
I have a group of friends from diverse culture and nationalities. We were planning to celebrate a friend’s birthday and give a surprise. The surprise was cutting the cake at 12 A.M and celebrating in the hostel room. I started discussing the various options to celebrate the birthday the next day. A diverse group has helped in decision making by giving various options like going for a movie as a group, visiting an orphanage, going to church, shopping in the mall, arranging a party in a restaurant and many other ideas. These ideas popped up due to the diverse friend's group. I then gave the list of options to the friend celebrating her birthday. The plan for the day was to be decided by her. The friend celebrating her birthday chose to visit the orphanage from the different ideas and we decided to go to the orphanage. In this manner, a diverse group has helped in decision making in my real life.
Yes, I think TIAA-CREF has a competitive advantage by valuing diversity. Diversity makes employees to involve and commit themselves in decision making by providing their ideas. This leads to creativity and innovation in the workplace to create a competitive advantage for the company. Innovation is a powerful tool to create a competitive advantage as it cannot be imitated easily. TIAA-CREF has this innovation tool due to its diverse workforce to get a competitive advantage.
I think that TIAA-CREF would continue to value diversity during economic turmoil. Roger Ferguson Jr., CEO of TIAA-CREF strongly believes that having a diverse workforce especially in the company board had enabled it to come out with a diverse point of view, ideas and opinions during the economic turmoil in the past. He believes that a diverse workforce is their major strength and in future also the company will value diversity for effective decision making.
