Explanation / Answer

Founded by Anita Riddick, The Body Shop is a premium body and skin care retailer operating out of more than 2000 stores across the world. It has established a reputation of a socially responsible company. It ensures all its products are being tested under the Ethical trade Program and is known to come up with products that are inspired by nature.

Based on the Caroll’s CSR Pyramid, the Ethical aspect is one of the 4 key responsibilities. Keeping this in mind the Body Shop has framed the Ethical Policies in its pursuit of social and environmental change, making a contribution to the society they thrive in. It believes in allocating a share of their profits to charities across the world. These donations are channeled through The Body Shop Foundation established in 1989. This is where the Philanthropic responsibility is applicable through the CSR Pyramid.

Values of The Body Shop(BS)

Stand against Animal testing – BS is renowned for its stand against Animal testing of cosmetic products. It believes in producing high quality, innovative products without harming any animals. Additionally, it refuses to deal with suppliers who test on animals. BS has shown strong commitment and has set high monitoring standards for its peers around the world.

Human Rights Defence – BS respects local, political and all cultural differences and always ensures that all their business activities adhere to basic human rights provisions. It strives to ensure proper working conditions, protection of privacy and appropriate security for all. BS has worked in the past with the UN to create awareness of violence against children. Additionally, it also enforces its suppliers to ensure these human rights and have regular audits to have a check on this.

Protect Planet Earth – It believes in supporting environmentally responsible materials and promotes technology that harness renewable sources of energy and sustainable raw materials. It strongly advocates for Sustainable Development that doesn’t compromise the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. It sets global standards which requires all stakeholders to adhere to relevant international legislations or conventions.

Support for Community Trade – BS aims to prevent injustice to small producers who are often at the unfortunate end in case of global crises. It wants to give a fair living wage, sustainable community development and a long-term relationship. Through this Community Trade BS launches gifts and accessories as new product development. It also gives them access to low cost raw materials for its products, with a tinge of ethics on it.

Some Major campaigns taken up by The Body Shop would be –

1.       Stop HIV: Spray to Change Attitudes Campaign – It worked hard to create the awareness how this deadly disease transmitted among young people. It partnered with MTV to launch this campaign. Proceeds from a fragrance were donated to the Stay alive foundation.

2.       Stop Violence in the Home Campaign – Domestic violence is prevalent even today in many societies and in 2006 it was estimated that 275 million children were subjected to domestic violence. It encouraged the public to speak out against domestic violence. It partnered with Women’s Aid to ensure women and child safety. It wanted everyone to feel safe in their own homes.

Through their activities, they have indeed helped the society and also maximized stakeholder’s interest and profit. It sets the tone for the entire world to abide by the concept of CSR and not neglect it in this ever changing world.
