The Games Children Play - Students consider the following when relating to the topic and your colleagues:

What games did you play as a child that you think of as agents of socialization? How did these games lead you to understand relationships or prepare for new ones?
How did you or your friends subvert the standard images or messages of the toys or games that you played with?
Are the toys and games of today still agents of socialization for children? Do they do the job as well, not as well, or just differently? What do you think the best and worst of today’s toys and games are in terms of helping children with socialization?

Explanation / Answer

1. As a child, I used to play games such as cricket, badminton etc. with my friends which gave us the opporunity to be with each other and get together as a group and socialize with each other. These games led to the bonding among each other and each individual used to feel as a part of the group which led to development of relationship among the children and inculcated the sense of care for each other.

2. As a group, me and my friends used to play a lot of games and were very naughty in our childhood. We used to undermine the messages that games carried by not understanding the relevance of such messages and throwing tantrums at each other and fighting with each other, thereby not gelling together as a group. For eg, cricket teaches us to perform as a group and succeed with each other's success. But we did not understand the message that the game carried and were busy getting individual records and not gelling together as a group.

3. In my opinion, the beginning of internet and indoor games have led to a decrease in socialization among children and they are not believed as agents of socialization today because children do not prefer to interact with each other that often and are busy in their online/virtual world. These games are not doing the job of getting the children to socialize. Best games of today are outdoor games such as football, basketball etc which help children socialize with each other whereas worst games are online games, mobile games etc which do not give any chance to children to socialize.
