You are the research manager within your organization, and you are grappling with a problem that needs further research. Your immediate supervisor is interested in using experimentation and observation research techniques in researching this problem and requests that you prepare a presentation to educate him on these methods. You are unsure whether using these techniques would be adequate, but you set yourself on a mission to analyze the two research methods to provide him with the best information.

Be sure to address the following questions/topics:

Let us go one by one –

Experimentation method – In this method, the person who is researching has the power to control the variables. Variable can be independent and dependent. In this the researcher tries to manipulate one variable while keeping other variable unchanged. This way, they can find out the way that can be implemented in an organization.

For example – In an organization dealing with steel parts for machinery, the products are good, and quality is assured but still the market capture is lower. Research carried out by the marketing agents suggest that they need to check the Human resource and manpower. Accordingly, adequate training was provided to sales team and suppliers were also invited. Then the market research was conducted again and surprisingly the results was ultimate. This process itself signifies how experiment done in an organization one variable is being applicable to the whole now. Therefore, this research is more focus in finding out whether the experiment done in an variable like sales team is beneficial or not for the organization.

For example – to increase the sales, company has given the option of re-colouring the furniture, if the sales increases, this will be adopted otherwise it will be discarded.

Observation research – This technique involves observing and noticing already existing activity like what people do currently or what consumers prefer. For example – Act like a customer, go to work station and perform observation. Like news channel quite play this way to capture important news. Check out the sales team pattern, act like one team member. Although one can not observe a person attitude, state of mind, motive and desire accurately.

Also the investigation takes time as when you want to observe the particular activity you need to wait for its happening. It is also time consuming, effort-based job which may be find as an unproductive work by some people.

Direct participation by the investigator is also one of the technique followed to observe.

Observation is the notable job wherein one doesn’t take any action whereas experiment is action-based job wherein one needs to take some action as an experiment to see the results.

Observation is effective when you need to start a particular line of business or you want to diversify your product range, you may like to visit your competitors as a customer and observe how are they operating their business or what products range you can differentiate.

But to bring the product in to market, you need to conduct the experiment by introducing the product in the market at the price and at such specification which you may have observe or planned and accordingly you experiment. Both should go hand in hand depending how much risk you would like to take by directly involving into experiment with proper market research.

If we see Amazon, they have done an experiment initially by introducing so easy refund and easy return policy which is appreciated hugely by customers and hence grabbing largest market share and also giving competition to flip kart.

Google also involved many experiments relating to many software's. Also Pay TM, Pay pal etc., are experimented and observed.
