200m Problem 4 (One-worker, Multiple-machine Analysis, 25 pts.) Show your calculations in the space provided, write your answers in the boxes A rapid prototyping department in a factory contains a number of machines devoted to 3-D printing small on demand for their customers. On average, the standard cycle to print one part is 48 minutes. parts This process takes approximately 10 minutes on average. a) Determine the number of 3-D printing machines the operator can handle if it takes 5 seconds to walk must remove the printed part and set the machine up for the next part. between machines with minimal machine idle time allowed. (10 points) machines b) How many seconds during each work cycle is a worker idle? seconds c) What is the hourly production rate of the machine cluster assuming the printers can only produce one part at a time?

Explanation / Answer

a)      Total Cycle time to finish one part = 48 mins

Avg. Set up time =10 mins

Time taken to walk between the machines = 5 secs

Let us assume there is x no. of machines and all machines are switched on functioning.

At the end of the first cycle, when the 1st machine required be set up for next part, lets say Set up time required 10 mins.

Now 5 sec consumers to walk upto the 2nd machine.

Hence, Total time taken before reaching to 2nd machine = 10mins + 5sec = 10.083mins

Similarly, Total time taken before reaching to 3rd Machine = 10.083mins

Now this will go on till x machines. However, the machine Idle time =0.

This means worker has to get back to first machine after 48 mins of start.

Therefore, total no of machine worker can handle = 48mins/10.083mins = 4.7

However, considering Machine Idle Time = 0, No of machines= 4.

b)      Idle time for worker = 4.7- 4= 0.7 mins = 45.6 secs

c)       Hourly production rate = 60mins/(cycle time+setuptime)= 60mins/58 mins= 1
