Refer to the skills and traits discussed in Chapter 7 that managers must possess to be successful. Pull upon your personal experiences. Be sure to use examples to support your statements.
Explanation / Answer
A good boss knows the employees well. He /she is always interested in knowing the subordinates' strengths, weaknesses, personality attributes, skills, skill gaps, learning ability, ability to work under pressure, resilience, adversity quotient, emotional quotient among many other qualities that enhance or pose hinderance the employee's performance.
After knowing the employees inside out, he identifies the most appropriate roles for each of them, and tries to make most of their abilities while trying to eliminate the weaknesses. He /she is keen on giving ample chances to the juniors and make them learning by doing the things themselves. He needs to be a task oriented person, but at the same time, needs to be practical so as to extract the best out of the employees. He/she should be an instant feedback provider, tough at work, but his /her strictness should have a purpose of making the things better and employees more efficient. He /she should be a good communicator, a conflict resolver, a people's man and someone who does not keep malice towards anyone. A good boss earns respect of everyone at work and beyond with ease.
A bad boss is always tense, quarrelsome and livid in appearance. He /she keeps complaining about the systems, people, processes, superiors, management, workers, employees and what not. He/she runs away from the responsibilities, and tries to impose them on the others. He /she is nowhere to be seen when poblems are to be solved, but you will find him /her standing in the first row when awards are at stake. He /she feels insecure from colleagues, subordinates and everyone else and always believes that everyone is after his /her job. He /she is always scheming about the subordinates, colleagues and everyone else whom he /she considers as a potential threat.
A bad boss is dangerous as he /she runs away from the work and always in search of a scapegoat who can take the blame of his /her misdeeds. He /she is not trustworthy and most of the people at work know it, and be cautious while dealing with him /her. He/she believes in controlling his /her workers with force, and keeps on ridiculing them every now and then. He/she is rarely seen with a smile or some words of praise for a worker without a cause. To prove himself /herself right, he /she uses all tricks in the book. Such people are always frustrated, create negativity in the work environment and cause conflicts and deterioration of productivity at workplace.
A bad boss always earns a pseudo respect of the subordinates and often badmouthed by all behind his /her back.
